edmunds TESTED
The 2025 XC40 doesn't excel in any one area, but pleasing performance, a comfortable interior and Google-backed in-car tech make it a well-rounded compact luxury SUV. Lackluster cargo space is the XC40's biggest drawback.
Pros
- Pro:Plenty of standard and available driver assist features
- Pro:Helpful Google-based technology features
- Pro:Easy to see out of
Cons
- Con:Cargo capacity is small for the class

Overview
The 2025 Volvo XC40 is the Swedish automaker's smallest conventionally powered SUV, slotting beneath the XC60 in the lineup. Like other modern Volvos, the XC40 delivers luxury and refinement in a package that oozes Scandinavian style. Volvo also sells an all-electric version called the XC40 Recharge, which is being renamed the EX40 for 2025. It's reviewed separately.
Edmunds spotlight: Infotainment by Google
All XC40s come with a 9-inch vertically oriented touchscreen infotainment system that integrates Google apps and the tech firm's voice-activated virtual assistant. By saying "Hey Google," you can tell the system to play music, lower the temperature inside the car, find and navigate to a restaurant, read your text messages out loud and more. The system uses your phone's data connection for most features, though some might require a separate subscription.
Competitors to consider
The XC40 competes with other subcompact luxury SUVs, including the Audi Q3, BMW X1, and Mercedes-Benz GLB and GLA. The Germans tend to be better all-around picks, but the Volvo's chic styling and impressive tech help it stand out. Check out our test team's Expert Rating below for more on how the XC40 stacks up against the competition.
Which XC40 does Edmunds recommend?
The XC40 Core comes pretty well equipped for a base model, offering standard heated front seats, wireless phone charging, lane keeping assistance and more. The one feature it's sorely missing is adaptive cruise control, which is locked away as part of the Pilot Assist hands-free driving system. To get that, you have to spring for the top Ultra trim.

2022 Volvo XC40 T5 Momentum 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A)
I love my new xc40 for its superb design, turbo engine, and especially sophisticated interior. This is my second Volvo and they just keep getting better and better now that Ford sold its stake in the company and they can freely create some of the best cars on the planet. Attention to detail and incredible reliability make these models top selling for Volvo.
UPDATE: I have had three … Volvos and loved them all for many reasons including a beautiful design, good peppy engine…. But it was always safety at the top of my list since we have young children.
That all went down the tube when my latest new xc40 had multiple incidents where the anti collision feature activated and we went into emergency braking. Any one of these could have caused à serious accident. Luckily I could regain control of the car but in all incidents there was nothing in the road and no danger. It was so bad my kids refused to get into the car.
After multiple visits to the Volvo dealer it became clear they didn’t know how to prevent it from happening a 9th or 10th time. In contacting Volvo customer service I thought maybe they could help with a trade assist or do something helpful. They made it so much worse - and never let you speak with “non human facing technicians “. Their name for them not mine. It made me go from being a huge brand supporter to really despising the manufacturer. It’s so sad but I just had to sell the car and purchase a competing luxury brand. And of all reasons - because the vehicle wasn’t safe and volvo wouldn’t share any information or help find a solution.
Not Perfect, But Close Enough

2022 Volvo XC40 T5 Momentum 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A)
Mine's a Momentum T5 AWD.
Not sure about the earlier review that XC40 is comparable to Mazda or BMW X1.
If you want performance, you’ve got to get the T5 (248 hp). With premium gas, I can do 0-60 in 5 sec.
Interior wise, very Scandinavian. Clean lines, solid, utilitarian design.
Heating gets a little noisy and transmission could be a little hesitant.
Safety features saved me … from close calls with pedestrians and cyclists on busy city streets.
Not perfect, but close enough.
Major mechanical problem after 2 months

2024 Volvo XC40 B5 Ultimate Bright 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 8A)
I have a brand new XC40 which experienced a major mechanical problem. My car had to be towed to the dealership 2 days ago. I do not have a final diagnosis or remedy and am told that may take another week. But I do know that the problem is serious and "never happens" and was called a "major fault". Reliability was my number one concern buying a new car - I had my previous car over 10 … years. I have never had to have my car towed for mechanical problems. Needless to say, this is very disappointing. I like the look of the car and some of the features and thought I was purchasing a long term reliable vehicle. The other negatives I would say are the head restraint position causes a lot of discomfort on longer drives. It is positioned too far forward for me, and I did not know this when just test driving the car. I was trying to resolve this with different pillows with no real solution yet. And I believe the car would be improved by more physical buttons such as for more of the climate control features. You have to use the infotainment screen, and it is difficult when driving to make simple changes like the temperature or fan speed. The google voice controls don't have all of the options you may want, and the voice controls don't always do what you say. My infotainment system has shut down and rebooted twice while I was driving. When this happens, you lose access to everything controlled through the infotainment system. I don't know what is causing this glitch. The car has good performance when driving - it's quick enough and a good drive. But these problems right now are overshadowing my experience with the car. This is a brand new car with 1,300 miles. These problems should not be part of a new car owner's experience.
Is there a zero star rating option?

2023 Volvo XC40 B4 Plus Bright 4dr SUV (2.0L 4cyl Turbo gas/electric mild hybrid 8A)
I have only owned this brand new Volvo xc40 2023 for three months and it has been in the shop for 29 days and counting. The IHU (radio) has been replaced. That replacement has been “fixed” once and it is now in the shop with the same issue- the IHU shuts down and this time with a warning not to drive the vehicle. The IHU is the hub that controls everything from the climate control to … the phone to the radio and navigation. It’s a big deal when it fails. There are other issues as well. The car shuts off if you open the door while it’s in park, the driver’s seat sometimes moves on its own and twice after turning off the ignition, I got a warning upon opening the door that the engine was still running (it was not). You might say I have a lemon (and I’m sure I do), but I’m also not confident that other Volvos won’t have similar problems. I would steer clear of a 2022 xc40.
We have a limited number of reviews for the 2025 Volvo XC40, so we've included reviews for other years of the XC40 since its last redesign.
