The 2024 Volvo C40 Recharge is a five-passenger compact electric SUV. It's based on the similarly sized XC40 Recharge but sports a sloping roofline, which cuts into cargo capacity but lends it a sleek profile. That distinctive look is part of the C40 Recharge's draw, and the focus on design continues inside with a cabin that's modern, upscale and packed with intuitive tech features.

Edmunds spotlight: The C40 Recharge's changes for 2024

For 2024, Volvo adds a second powertrain to the lineup: a 248-horsepower single-motor rear-wheel-drive option that serves as the new base powertrain. The 402-horsepower dual-motor setup is still available as an upgrade. Range increases significantly over last year's model. The new single-motor variant is EPA-estimated to go 297 miles on one charge, but even last year's dual-motor version gets bumped to 257 miles, a 31-mile improvement.

Which C40 Recharge does Edmunds recommend?

Rarely do we recommend the range-topping model, but in the C40 Recharge's case, the Ultimate trim is a pretty good value. For about $5,000 more than the base Core model, you get adaptive cruise control, enhanced lane keeping, a Harman Karmon premium audio system, and all the contents of the Climate package. The 402 horsepower of the Twin Motor powertrain is tempting but we'd probably go with the Single Motor version, which offers adequate thrust and 40 miles of extra range.

Volvo C40 Recharge models

The 2024 Volvo C40 Recharge is an all-electric subcompact SUV with seating for five. It's available in three trim levels: Core, Plus and Ultimate. Two drivetrain configurations are available for the C40, including a single rear-mounted motor paired with an 82-kWh battery pack and a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup powered by a 78-kWh battery. Single-motor variants produce 248 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, while dual-motor models make 402 horsepower and 486 lb-ft. I love this SUV, but the range is not the best. Volvo claims 240 miles but you are not supposed to charge 100% which brings that down. When it is around freezing the battery drains quickly. How can Tesla and other car companies get over 300 miles? It is great if you are driving short distance. When you drive on the open road longer distances the charge goes away quicker than in stop …
