2025 Nissan Frontier Review
Overview

The Frontier is a midsize truck offered in two cab sizes and two bed lengths, with rear- or four-wheel drive. It comes with a single powertrain, a 3.8-liter V6 and a nine-speed automatic transmission. The Frontier was all-new in 2022, though it still lacked some of the merits of its primary competitors. But Nissan is continually improving the truck and has made meaningful changes for 2025.
Edmunds spotlight: Nissan ups the Frontier's game for 2025
One of our gripes since the Frontier's 2022 redesign was the difficulty of finding a comfortable driving position, due largely to the lack of a telescoping steering column. Nissan rectified that problem for 2025 — all trim levels now get that feature. There's also a revised dashboard design that accommodates a 12.3-inch touchscreen on SV and higher trims. Towing capacity is increased to 7,150 pounds, which puts it about in the middle of the class. Perhaps the most significant change is the addition of the crew-cab/long-bed configuration to the three upper trims. The configuration was previously only available on a single trim.
Competitors to consider
The Frontier has a solid list of capable rivals. The freshest of these are the Toyota Tacoma and Ford Ranger, which were both new in 2024. The Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon twins were new in 2023. All of these are traditional trucks with multiple output options, different cab and bed configurations, and dedicated off-road trims. The Honda Ridgeline should be considered if you're after comfort, space and practical storage. It's also the best-handling truck of the group.
Which Frontier does Edmunds recommend?
The SV trim level is a small jump in cost from the base S trim and it adds only a few standard features, but it opens the door to the optional SV Convenience package, which adds utilitarian features like a bedliner, tie downs, a trailer hitch and trailer wiring. Heated seats, the larger 12.3-inch touchscreen, and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are also included.

Nissan Frontier models
The 2025 Nissan Frontier is a midsize truck available in two body styles: an extended cab with two doors (King Cab) and a four-door crew cab. Powering every Frontier is a 3.8-liter V6 (310 horsepower, 281 lb-ft of torque) and a nine-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and four-wheel drive (with low-range gearing) is optional.
Nissan offers the Frontier in four trim levels: S, SV, Pro-X (Pro-4X with four-wheel drive) and SL. The King Cab is available in S and SV trims with a 6-foot cargo bed. The crew cab is offered in S, SV, Pro-X and SL trims with a 5-foot bed standard. Only the SV and SL are available with the 6-foot bed. 2023 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X 4dr Crew Cab 4WD 5.0 ft. SB (3.8L 6cyl 9A)
Just traded a 2019 Tacoma for a new Frontier Pro 4X. I switched to Toyota from three Nissan's in a row mostly because I liked the looks. Was very unhappy with Toyota's performance, mileage, and the fact it left me stranded in the heat three times in a row (vapor lock due to a poorly designed fuel pump). Also the ride and shifting were always choppy. The new Frontier is largely a … Toyota clone in the exterior looks department. Peformance-wise, it's miles ahead in ride and power. The back seat still isn't useful for much more than kids and groceries, and I'm still learning to navigate the tech features, but I haven't found a bell or whistle missing. If you're looking for a mid-sized pickup, drive this one last, you're going to be at the dealership until they hand you the keys.

2023 Nissan Frontier SV 4dr Crew Cab 4WD 5.0 ft. SB w/Prod. End 03/23 (3.8L 6cyl 9A)
I looked at Chevy Colorado, Toyota Tacoma, Honda Ridgeline, Ford Ranger, before buying the Nissan Frontier Midnight Edition. All of the midsize trucks I looked at had useless bells and whistles (that added to the overall price of the truck) except the Nissan Frontier. It's a TRUCK. It drives like a truck, rides like a truck, has the power of a truck. It does have a few nice things tech … wise, but just enough and nothing useless.

2023 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X 4dr Crew Cab 4WD 5.0 ft. SB w/Prod. End 03/23 (3.8L 6cyl 9A)
The Frontier is packed with features and has the looks to match. Compares very favorably to the new GMC Canyon Denali and is much higher build quality than my 2018 Tacoma SR5 which I gave to my son. Doors sound solid when shutting and I love the acceleration of the V6. The transmission doesn't seem confused like on the Tacoma. So far, on my highway commute I'm getting 25.4 mpg. Not … too shabby!

2023 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X 4dr Crew Cab 4WD 5.0 ft. SB (3.8L 6cyl 9A)
I got the 2023 Pro 4x withe the Pro premium, technology, Pro convenience and towing packages and I’m loving it so far. The ride is very good for a four wheel drive truck. I’ve been getting 19 mpg combined and 23 on the highway. As I said in my review title, it does everything well. It’s got great acceleration and l really like the way it looks. The Fender stereo sounds great and … everything in the cabin is laid out well. Could not be happier with my purchase. Don’t pay attention to the major car review sites, they don’t like anything that isn’t a turbo. There are plenty of other reviews out there that really like the Frontier, I highly recommend the Pro 4x.
