2024 Mazda 3 Hatchback Review
Overview

The Mazda 3 is a compact car offered as either a sedan or hatchback. It can be equipped with one of two engines: a base four-cylinder or an upgraded turbocharged four-cylinder, which also comes with standard all-wheel drive. It might not be as practical or efficient as some of its competitors, but the Mazda 3 has one key thing going for it: It's exceptionally fun to drive.
The Mazda 3 stands out from the crowd with its responsive steering and impressive handling, which contribute to an enjoyable daily driving experience — especially when paired with the available turbo engine. Sadly, the Mazda 3's available six-speed manual transmission is only offered with the base engine and front-wheel drive.
For 2024, the Mazda 3 receives new trim packages, including a Carbon Turbo specification, which brings many of the features from the Carbon Edition package to the 2.5 Turbo model. Also new is the Select Sport package, which replaces the previous Select package. But the biggest news is the addition of an available 10.25-inch center touchscreen. We found the rotary dial interface of the standard 8.8-inch screen a bit cumbersome, so this is a welcome change. The system comes standard on 2.5 Turbo models and adds wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality.
The compact car segment has dwindled over the years, but there are still plenty of small hatchback and sedan rivals left for the Mazda 3, including the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Nissan Sentra, Kia Forte and Hyundai Elantra. Check out our test team's Expert Rating below to help you decide if the Mazda 3 is right for you.
What’s it like to live with?
To get an idea of the ownership experience, check out the Edmunds 2020 Mazda 3 long-term test. We evaluated a Mazda 3 sedan over the course of one year, and overall, it impressed us, though the non-turbo engine left us wanting for more power. Read all about what we liked and what we didn't.
Which 3 does Edmunds recommend?
For the best balance of features, performance and value, go for a 2.5 S model equipped with the Select Sport package. Its naturally aspirated four-cylinder has enough power for most, and added features like 18-inch wheels, synthetic leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control and hands-free keyless entry lend it a more upscale feel.

Not as cool as my Veloster Turbo

2024 Mazda 3 2.5 S Select Sport 4dr Hatchback (2.5L 4cyl 6A)
Features that I don't need and missing features that I want. It's OK but don't love it like my Veloster Turbo. The Select Sport model has no turbo, faux leatherette seats with no heating but they do smell bad. No sun roof and no 12V DC outlet. It just doesn't handle like the Veloster either. As far as the safety features and phone app, I can do without all that. Pretty car but if you … want turbo, real heated leather seats and sunroof, it will cost you $10,000.00 more.

2024 Mazda 3 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus 4dr Hatchback AWD (2.5L 4cyl Turbo 6A)
Test drove a Mazda 3 hatchback turbo recently. Wonderful interior. AWD is a great addition. Apart from these, I didn't find anything outstanding about its driveablility. The car felt competent but nothing stood out. This may be because my current car is a Subaru WRX. It turns on a dime. Acceleration is immediate and impressive.

2024 Mazda 3 2.5 S Premium 4dr Hatchback (2.5L 4cyl 6M)
Purchased Platinum Quartz 6 speed manual Premium Hatchback in mid -June 2024. Live in coastal Maine where driving the 6 spd on predominantly country roads is a real joy. Great, flat cornering, good comfort/handling balance and much more quiet on highway than Civic Hatch. A little tire impact harshness on bad roads will be improved by a more premium tire(Contis) than the mediocre OE … Toyos. Took an 1800 mile road trip loaded for camping and air bnb'ing...plenty of space. Have averaged 41.17 mpg for 3100 miles...and this included hours in stop and go commuting traffic around Toronto, CAN. Country driving 43-44mpg! Seat memory settings for the 2(6'4"; 5'4") drivers is sweet! The paint color really compliments the hatchback shape. Last chance to shift-your-own fun to drive efficient hatch!
First 1000 miles. Love this car!

2024 Mazda 3 2.5 S Premium 4dr Hatchback (2.5L 4cyl 6M)
I have loved my 2016 Mazda 6 manual. When it reached 200,000 carefree miles I decided to trade.
I am a 3 pedal girl and happy that Mazda still offers a 6 speed manual albeit a slim offering.
I thought hard about a Miata but hubby convinced me it would not be practical.
Mazda of Roswell had a red Mazda 3 hatchback manual in stock. I fell in love the first drive. After some haggling and 0 … percent financing, the "great red shark" came home.
The car is drop dead gorgeous, and a blast to drive. The engine is snappy and the transmission a dream.
There are many "gadgets" I am not big on gadgets, but this was the only trim. I look at it as "things to break. Time will tell.
Unbelievably, I am getting around 38 mpg on my stop and go 30 mile commute. Wow!
There is definitely not as much space as the 6 but means less crap to put in the trunk.
I have not had anyone in the back, but on a fairly long trip, my husband was comfortable.
The only cons I see is the glove box is microscopic and the center console is a giant hole with no organization.
The rear suspension is fine despite what folks say.
I am very happy.
