Dealership Sales Review

I went to look at some used cars at Doug Smith recently. I spoke with 2 sales reps and overall was not impressed. First of all, they didn't even want me to drive the cars. The first thing they did was "run the numbers". The first guy had to leave half way through the process, so I got stuck with someone else. Ron, the second one, said he was the new guy, and didn't know much about the car i was looking at. Later on in the process he said he had 2 other guys coming to look at that specific one the very next day, so he must have known something about it. We talked about the car I wanted to trade in and the conversation got pretty heated. I still can't believe after all the stereotypes about used car salesmen, they still always say; "let me go talk to my manager" And they keep coming back with different answers. They say they don't want to play games, but that's all they want to do. They mark up their cars so much and then offer you less than low book trade in on your car. I understand there is money to be made by the dealer, but come on. You expect me to believe that you are only making $500 on the car i want to buy, but you are only willing to pay me 2/3 of what my car is worth. After I left because they couldn't make the numbers work, Ron called me 6 times between 5pm and 8pm. Telling me they were pennies away from making it work out, and I should come back by and we could get a deal done. After the 3rd call, I just had to ignore him. Talk about desperate. I want to give car dealerships a chance, I really do, but every single experience I've had has been just like this or worse. I really hope that managers at these dealerships will start managing the employees and helping them along the way with sales. Instead of just sitting behind a computer and running numbers all day. Find out what a customer really wants and what is going to work for the customer AND the business. In the end, it's not 100% about the customer, but contrary to what Doug Smith and his crew think, it's not 100% about the business either.
