Dealership Sales Review

Disappointed about a failed opportunity for customer service
Written by Brian_Bean on 02/13/2020

We went in to the dealership to purchase my vehicle upon lease-end. We wanted to put the vehicle in the name of someone other than myself and so we thought it would be easier to work with the dealer rather than the DMV. However, when we got in and looked at the transaction details, we noticed a number of dealership fees that totaled over $500. I expressed that I wasn't really interested in paying that much in fees just to basically fill out registration forms and felt it was the dealership just trying to make extra money on an easy deal. When the sales manager came out to explain, he flat-out lied to us about one of the fees and said it was just part of the title and registration costs that we would incur anywhere. We called him out on it and his response was "I'm not here to argue with anyone. I'm just telling you how it is and those are beyond our control." When I then referenced his own document's fine print that accompanied the asterix on the fee, he then backtracked and said that it was actually a dealer fee after all that the law allowed him to charge much more for. We ended up not working with them because I didn't appreciate the attempted deception in order to make a quick payoff. I have bought two vehicles from this dealership and had great experiences, but this really soured me from buying my third when we look at upgrading our minivan next year. Good dealerships are about relationships. It wouldn't have taken 20-30 minutes for them to help us with this paperwork - and in the middle of a Thursday afternoon they were not busy - and it would've told me a lot about how they valued me as a customer. But instead, when it appeared we weren't going to pay their fees, the manager seemed offended and was more than happy to let us do it ourselves. It's too bad. They had an opportunity to really show customer service. I guess they are more concerned about quick and easy money every chance they get, even if it means lying to people who don't read fine print.
