Worst Experience I Have Ever Had Purchasing a Vehicle
Written by tracicakes on 08/22/2015

Purchased a certified-used 2011 Kia Rio a little less than 3 weeks ago. Spent hours at dealership while the salesman/finance person worked out "the best deal". I had a trade that didn't run very well, but still drove & had a straight body. Was told that I couldn't get a decent interest rate on the car, because I "was in a higher risk category", due to having a mortgage and another car loan (though I have good credit, good income, and have had the same job for 20 years). I wasn't told what the interest rate was until I signed the paperwork--was only given the information about being in this 'high risk' category. I had taken a glance at the paper that the salesman/finance person scratch their notes on, and I thought it said 3.99% interest. The rate the dealership sent me away with was **13.99**, with a payment $100 more than what I was comfortable with. At no time in my life, even very young & with no credit have I paid that high an interest rate. The finance person told me this was no problem, and that I could refinance in 6 months at the interest rate I had on my current vehicle. He said the bank just needed to see that I could make my payments (which should have been evident by looking at my credit report). The sales person delivered the car to my home that evening, but said there was "a mistake on the paperwork", and took the entire envelope of papers given me by the finance guy. I had a car that I had signed for, but no paperwork on it at all. The next day, I delivered my trade-in, the title, and the service records for it. A day or 2 later, I received a notice in the mail from NW Community CU, stating they had a counter offer for me on the loan. I called them for the offer, and was told they would give me 5.39% interest, though not for the entire amount I was financing. I WAS NEVER TOLD I HAD COUNTER OFFERS--I thought I was stuck with the tremendously high rate. I called the finance department at Power, and spoke to a man by the name of David. David checked my file, and found that I had more than one counter offer, and they were at HALF THE INTEREST than what the paperwork originally said. I also mentioned that there was no information on my paperwork about my trade-in. The finance person had mentioned when I signed papers that they had the trade in storage, and may be able to wholesale it. There was never anything put in the paperwork about the trade. David told me that the dealership couldn't just take the vehicle and not give me anything for it. He said it was possible to work out a wholesale deal on it, but that it wouldn't be worth much (which I knew). David said he would look into the trade, and listened to my venting for some time, as I was (and AM) extremely steamed about this entire thing. He and said he would get to work right away on the deal. I got a call from David the next day, stating that he had negotiated with Wells Fargo, and had been able to get my interest rate down to half what I had originally been quoted, and my payment down about $80.00. Much better. He also said that a wholesale on the trade-in would be arranged, and the dealership would cut me a check. Well....At time of this review, the car is sitting in Power Kia's service department for the second time in less than 3 weeks, with another serious mechanical problem. The first time the car broke down was 8 hours after we signed the papers--in a fast food drive-thru. Car had to be pushed out of the drive-thru into the parking lot and left there, because after conking out, it wouldn't start again. Called dealership the next morning, and got the finance person I originally dealt with on the phone. I was told to have the car towed to the service department. Told him I would NOT be paying any tow fees, or any repair fees, to have the vehicle fixed. Power had the car towed themselves. This was a Saturday; car wasn't ready until Wednesday. We never learned what the problem was. Fast-forward exactly one week, to another almost 100-degree day in Salem. The air conditioning in the car went completely out, as did the heat and vents. None of it worked--no air blew out at all. I called Power Kia, and was told all the sales persons were in a meeting. I insisted that someone be found that could assist me. A male by the name of Shane came on the line, and I gave him the rundown on what was going on. He said it was a good thing that I was dealing with Power, because they stood by their products. I was told to bring the car in to the service department, and that a loaner car would be found to issue to us. I started the car up to bring it to Power, and about halfway to the dealership, the entire air/vent system turned on again. I decided to bring the car in anyway, given that it was obvious there was something wrong. Upon bringing the car in, I was told by the service department they didn't have any loaner cars available. Service called the Sales Department, and asked them to round up a loaner vehicle. I spoke to the male at the counter in the service department, told him what had happened, and that halfway to the dealership the system turned on. He told me it would be hard to diagnose, since "things were working now". He was reluctant to allow me to bring the car in, though I had mentioned that this was the SECOND TIME IN 2 WEEKS the car had been there for a major problem. The service person contacted someone elsewhere in the dealership by phone, and was talking about how to handle this situation. I heard him say something to the effect of, "if it's ok with her I'm going to just send her out with the car", as if it was his intention to send me away with the vehicle, despite the fact that it was having a serious issue. I told him before he'd even hung up the phone that it was definitely NOT ok with me to send me away with the car, because I wanted it looked at to make sure that whatever was wrong got fixed. The salesman took my keys, and moved the car into the service bay. When he came back into the office, he told me the vents were working great, and that it was "very cold" inside the car. I told him that it was great the vents were working NOW, because the previous couple of days it had been 100 degrees inside the car. After waiting for the better part of an hour, a loaner car was produced by the sales department. I made contact with the original finance person before leaving that day, and asked about the check for the trade-in I had brought to them 15 days prior. He said that there were a lot of steps to be taken before a check could be cut, and that I should call him if I hadn't received the check by the following Monday---which will mark 3 weeks exactly since initiating the deal in the first place. 3 weeks, and we don't have the car we bought, nor do we have the check for the car we traded in. I have made 6 (SIX) trips to the dealership now, in less than 3 weeks time, to what end? All in all, the only positive thing I have to say about this dealership/car-buying experience is that the sales/finance/service people are quite nice. That's it. The smoke and mirrors tactics that are used by the finance/sales people are incredibly inappropriate, and definitely not what I would consider professional.
