Dealership Sales Review
Unlawful / Fraudulent practices: Caught red-handed. Attempting to participate in the "Cash For Clunkers" program with a fully qualified and verified "clunker". We made a deal, and in signing the papers, they attempted to sip in their own little document making ME responsible for the $4,500 dealer rebate. I caught it. They then tried to hand me yet ANOTHER piece of paper. THIS one they assured me was directly from the Feds, and a required part of the program. It was CLEARLY a modified form, with additional wording added by the DEALER, and photocopied, which basically stated the same thing, attmepting to make the BUYER responsible. I caught that one too, and now informmed them that this was unlawful. Nick, the manager, insisted it was a federal form. (which I still have in my posession.) Now, I'm not stupid. I've done my homework, and I have already seen every required form. On the CARS.GOV website, they SPECIFICALLY state that there is NO such buyer requirement, and nothing like that should be signed, and that ANY dealer attempting to do so should be reported to the NHTSA. (which I did) Further, trying to save the deal, they offered to sign the deal, but NOT deliver my vehicle until they had gotten their rebate. AGAIN, this is specifically forbidden under the CARS.GOV program, which explicity states that the dealer MUST let the customer take the car immediately. Period. For the fraudulent federal form, they have been reported to the Federal Trade Comission as well as NHTSA. Now tell me... WHY would a dealer take a guy like me who NEVER buys new cars, make a deal, and then bend over backwards to try to rip them off at the last minute? We were 5 minutes away from a finalized deal, and not only did they flush it down the toilet, but to that, they add a WHOLE lot of mistrust, bad feelings, and the obvious fact that I will relate these details to friends, family, co-workers, and the Internet. I've never purchased a new car before, and all the horror stories I've heard throughout the years is one of the key reasons. THAT is why I was so careful at signing, and caught them. TWICE!! I see now that I should have followed my instincts, and simply searched out a safe and reputable private sale as I normally do, by-passing all of these shoddy dealer practices. Shame on you, Cherry Hill Subaru.
