2012 Subaru Impreza: Fuel Economy Update for May

June 3, 2013

2012 Subaru Impreza

May was the final month in the long-term test of our 2012 Subaru Impreza. We did not have the Impreza but a week last month before it returned to Subaru. It was enough time to set one record, however.

We recorded our worst single fill-up, at 17.4 mpg, in May. We should note, though, that this was not from a full tank of fuel. During our test we never quite reached the claimed highway returns of 36 mpg. Our best was a repeatable 31 mpg. And so we bid the Impreza farewell. Stay tuned for the wrap up.

Worst Fill MPG: 17.4
Best Fill MPG: 31.0
Average Lifetime MPG: 25.9
EPA MPG Rating (City/Highway/Combined): 27/36/30
Best Range: 437.5 miles
Current Odometer: 18,674

I guess in the end this Impreza is much more efficient than the prior version. But it's not nearly as efficient as advertised. And it's no more efficient than the CX-5 which has more space and is more entertaining to drive.

Just another thought. I know several people who own Outbacks and as much as I hate what Subaru has done to that car, the efficiency is remarkable. The Outback is big and AWD and the people I know repeatedly get mileage in the high 20s. I'm wondering if they're asking too much of the 2.0 L in the Impreza and maybe mpg is suffering (kind of the way the Explorer with the 2.0 Ecoboost has a hard time getting its advertised mileage.) I wonder how the Impreza would do with the 2.5 L from the Outback/Legacy?

  • Fuelly average is 27mpg.
