Nissan Quest/Mercury Villager Starting & Stalling Problems

  • Re: 1996 Nissan Quest bank 1 lean [ihateefilol]

Basically this means that an oxygen sensor in bank 1 detected a lean condition (too much oxygen in the exhaust). On V6/V8/V10 engines, Bank 1 is the side of the engine that has cylinder #1. In other words, your fuel did not seem to be pump into the place in time. When was last time you change your "fuel filter" ? If you got new and good "fuel filter" already, there ... Read More

My '96 Nissan Quest runs great in the winter time, but during the summer months it gets a strong smell of gas inside the cab and outside aqs well, stalls out and won't start again for about 10 minutes of sitting. I also get a code of bank 1 lean. I replaced the Ignition Control Module, and did not fix it. Any suggestions or tips

It seems to me your starter was fine. When you can not start, it has nothing to do with oil change either. Your mechanics may have done a wrong guess and did the unnecessary work and charged you, then find out your van still had problem, so continue to proposing more work that he just guess and not sure if it will cure the problem. Since you disagreed, so the problem ... Read More

Actually we have been a Nissan fan for some years. Let's see, Had a 1991 Maxima, then 1993 Sentra, then 1996 Pathfinder, then a 2004 Maxima in 2004, then we down sized for a 2000 maxima. When we found out that we were expecting our first baby, we upgraded to a 2005 Nissan Murano in 2008, then realized, that we didn't need an SUV so down sized I guess to a ... Read More

Personally I think the 2011 Sienna is a better looking minivan. The Quest looks more boxy and squared off from the back and they still have the sliding door track down farther on the body panel. Chrysler pioneered the hidden door track and the two sliding doors in their 1996 minivan redesign. We are still driving one of those 15 years later. I can't understand why minivan designers today don't duplicate ... Read More

This would be an easy one for the mechanic, he only needed to switch two spark plug wires for this effect. Sounds fishy to me as well. I don't think I'd ever go back to that mechanic again. Be careful what you say about him, but I'd let my friends know about this experience and advise them to stay away.

I don't know if anybody have a similar problems that I experienced. Initially whenever I started the engine and put it in reverse/drive the car will not move and just shake. I have to turn the ignition OFF and restart so that it will move until such time that the car will just stalled and the check engine will lights ON. I brought the car to vespia and technician told me ... Read More

Sounds fishy to me, take it to another mechanic. It seems like because you refused the tune up he made sure you couldn't get away without it. The rotten egg smell is gas, to much is burning, gas has sulfur in it that causes the smell.

Yesterday my van would not start. All the lights on the dashboard came on, but nothing happened when I turned the key - no clicking nothing. So I had the car towed to a gas station in my town. I was later told that it needed a new starter as well as an oil change. Bill came to $288. I said fine. Then 2 hours later I get a phone call ... Read More

Technician told me 3 error codes 1 for knock sensor, 2 for 1st gear sensor, 3 is 3rd sensor problem. Advised to take it to dealers for fixing. • Engine stalls upon deceleration

I have a Nissan Quest 1996 with 74,000 miles. I have a mysterious problem that is driving me nuts, and the Dealer cannot figure out the problem either. The engine runs very well but then it stalls when it gets warm, only upon deceleration. That is, when I left my foot off the pedal. Particularly, when I am turning. It does not happen all the time -- an intermittent problem. However, ... Read More

Well, my temps never go over the M (norMal) on the gauge, and head temps read in regular ranges. I'll keep an eye on it, but I can't see how that accounts for the enormous gas mileage decrease.

I had a similar problem earlier this year in May. I posted all the details in this forum if you want to read the whole story. The short version is that my 95 was getting hot and running bad. Replaced the thermostat and it worked. The dealer explained that even a slight increase in temp. causes the computer to do several things to prevent major damage. All of these adjustments cause ... I have advice, although not from problems with my quest. I had a volkswagen which I bought in 1996. It had defects in the paint, which after giving the dealership 2-3 chances to repaint we realized it would never look 'factory new' (which is of course what you pay for when you buy a car). I couldn't get any satisfaction from the dealership and I was so down about the outcome ... Read More

I agree with earlier post - this area is kind of biased to Quest - but I honestly think it delivers the best value in many cases. For reference, I have been driving a 1995 Ford Windstar since 8/10/94 and it just cracked the 125k mark this week. Needed plenty of tender loving care and $ to make it though. Still runs, but it is time to move on... I'm getting ... Read More

I purchased a 2004 Quest S (Mats, Seat package, microfilter, DVD, paint sealant) this afternoon. Considering the excess baggage i was briging to this deal, I was very please with the overall experieince. I traded two cars, 2001 Malibu LS (35,500 miles and in the middle of a 5 yr. loan) and a 1996 Ford explorer (V8 with 146,300 miles and a badly dented tailgate). They gave me $8100 for the ... I think the '94 Villager I just bought does indeed have a leaking head gasket. The previous owner gave me all of the records and I read through them last night. There are mentions of a coolant smell in the engine compartment going all the way back to 1996 when the van was still under warranty. Each time the dealer said they couldn't find a leak, until August of 2000 when ... Read More

The majority of the remainder of the estimate was for manifold gaskets that had to be replaced when they were taken off to reach the knock sensor and app. 5 hours labor to do the job.
