2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA250: Not Much Headroom in Back

February 19, 2014

2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA250

You didn't think Mercedes could get away with a roofline like the 2014 CLA250's and not have a downside did ya? Well, here's what you have to live with in the back seat. Not much headroom and a tight squeeze to get in thanks to the small door openings.

Surprisingly enough, there's decent space for your knees and toes once you're in. Anyone under six feet would be just fine unless the front seats were adjusted all the way back.

Would it be a little claustrophobic? Maybe, but the CLA only has a 106.3-inch wheelbase to work with. Add that sloping roofline to the mix and there's only so much space to go around.

A smallish car with coupe roof does not have much headroom in the back? It's amazing what they teach in school these days. You could be skinny but not agile and those door openings would be a pain. They look even worse than my '06 S60.

106.3 inches is a lot. My old Impreza had a 98 inch wheel base.

Sat in this car at the Pgh Auto Show. It makes the poorest use of space imaginable. The front seatback is actually behind the door pillar when adjusted for normal people, making the rear seat useless.

Headroom isn't a big deal for me but my biggest complaint is the backseat is very short and provides no thigh support! I can't imagine sitting back there for a long trip.
