Same story here in NJ with 2004 RX-8 with 51,000 miles. I am the first and only owner of this 8. Hot air blowing when AC is turned on. Happened two days in a row. First day it was fixed by twiddling the temp dial. No luck second day. It is in shop now for replacement - quoted cost is $650!!!! Looking to get that back when Mazda acknowledges the problem ... I bought the 2004 RX8 when it first came out and currently have about 29,000 miles. I have been experiencing the car not starting if it sits past three or four days...This have occurred for more than five (5) times now and I have to call roadside assistance to have it towed to the dealer for them to start (decompress the engine) the car. I hate to admit this, but I feel prey to the eye candy and responsiveness of the Mazda rx8. I have recently purchased a pre-owned 2004 rx8 with about 80K miles on it. Love the car. However, I appear to be experiencing the same problems as many other '04 rx8 owners. I am looking for some experienced advice as I have been provided with conflicting instructions so far. Hey Trispec - good to see a post again from a fellow Bostonian. My 2004 MT GT is still zooming along wonderfully (36K now) except for one setback (which of course happened on a parkway just outside NYC so I was nowhere near home) The heat shield over the catalytic converter corroded off and started hanging by the wires leading to the O2 sensor bouncing along under the car. Hi johncalifornia! im actually in the market for an RX-8 myself (2004 with 40 000K) and my biggest concern is that of the oil. Now down here in Canada, where the weather can be very cold and harsh, you don't see a whole lot of RX-8 especially in the winter. But for the most part, im concerned about the oil consumption. I would like to add a few comments to darkpath's reply. The 2004 rx8 is probably best with a manual transmission--there seem to be some problems with the 4-speed automatic in the early years. Also the rx8 needs to be monitored more closely than most other cars. The battery provided with the rx8 in 2004 was very weak. If you happen to flood the engine[which probably will happen sometime],then the battery life ... Read More

'04 model year with an auto tranny in hot climates is where compression problems are most prevalent w/8s. Auto transmission models have only one oil cooler which is not enough. Rotary produces lots of heat. It's inherent to the design. Manual models have dual oil coolers, and this helps keep things tame under the hood in hot climate, stop and go driving. At any rate, the 100,000 mile/8 Year Warranty offered ... Read More

I had an interesting experience driving up a steep hill in Boston after a recent snowstorm that put a lot of slush on the road. Re: Lease incentives on RX8 [vroom7]

Something is not adding up. Does the $26,895 include the destination charge? My 2004 price list shows MSRP for the 04 AT as $25,180 . Sports pack for AT is $1,800 and touring pack for AT is $3,500. So $26,895 for the car + touring pack does not add up. If this car really is an AT w/touring it would be more like: $25,180 + $3,500 + $520 = $29,200 Invoice ... Read More

I'd pass on this deal. Just for comparison purposes, I was offered a deal on a $32,000 MSRP GT for $24,500 (Invoice minus $4,500). Looks to me like you're paying sticker minus $4,300. By the way, Mazda gave the dealerships a $4,000 incentive to apply towards these cars. What the dealership chipping in, a $300 discount? No way! If you can get them to knock $4,300 off of invoice, that would ... Read More

RX8 reliability problems

We are considering buying an RX8 and have read the problems listed here. We have been told the oil light problem was corrected with a recall and change of the oil pan, therefore the new 2004 car we are considering buying would not have this problem. Is that true? I haven't seen many RX-8s on the road, probably due to the winter. Not quite. I happen to own one of the 30+ highway mpg 9,000 rpm S2000 that is both quicker than and more fuel efficient than the RX-8. I have also briefly looked into the M3 convertible and, according to the 3-4 M3 owners I've talked to, BMW's seem to get consistently higher mileage on the highway than their EPA ratings (25-27 for the 6-speed M3 vs. a rating of 23/24).
