2013 Ford Focus ST: New Shoes

2013 Ford Focus ST

As Monty noted in a previous post, our recent autocross outing had taken its toll on the Focus' front tires. This afternoon, I dropped off the car and two new tires at our local shop, Stokes Tire Service.

I let them know that the new tires should go up front and asked him to take a look at the old ones and let me know what he thought. I got a call 30 minutes later and he said the old ones were fine and if it were his car, he wouldn't have bothered replacing them. In the interest of safety, we had them changed anyway.

But I had him save the old tires and stuffed them in the hatch. In the event I get to autocross the Focus ST again, at least I'll have the old tires to run without risking the new ones.

go to any tire manufacturer website. if the website says anything about where new tires should go it will ALL say that new tires should go on the rear. it is a safety issue.

here is a post from the mustang forums from long ago. unfortunately most of the manufacturer links are now dead (and i don't have the desire to find new links) but they worked at the time and you can see the consensus. http://mustangforums.com/forum/s197-handling-section/512648-question-on-tire-wear-2.html not sure how this comment section will format things so here is a list of the manufacturers i found that recommended new tires go on the rear: goodyear, bfgoodrich, pirelli, michelin, dunlop, cooper, falken. tire websites that recommended rear installation: tire industry association, discount tire, tirerack. i even found a website of an attorney that specializes in suing tire installers for negligence in installing new tires on the front.
