Halfway through my Sentra lease...options?
by rasldasl on Fri Jul 11 19:38:01 PDT 2008
I went through the typical dealer experience the day I leased my Sentra. Would have signed away my first born child to get out of there. Instead signed a lease for a $21,000 loaded Sentra SL that they somehow had capitalized at $23,000 (and I don't think this included any fees/tax/title). Long story short, I am paying $369/month for a 36 month/36,000 mile lease. I am a bit over on mileage but can probably keep it down for the remaining 18 months to come in about even. I think I am paying way too much and could probably have bought the thing for the same payment but that's water under the bridge. Here is my question: I acutally like the car and might want to buy it out at lease end. The problem is that the way they structured the lease the buyout is about $12,000. I think that is more than the car is going to be worth. Do I have any room to negotiate this price? I don't want to have to turn it in and then buy a similar car used, not knowing the history of it, when I could just buy this one. Also, I am not familiar with how this buy-out affects things like sales tax. I know if I buy a car for $12,000 cash with no trade-in here in NJ I will pay $840 sales tax. Was sales tax on the whole price of the car already paid when I leased it or just tax on the difference between capitilized cost and buyout price? I spoke to a salesman at another dealer and he indicated that if I want a new Nissan that I might be able to get out of the lease as soon as 6 months early without having to pay the remaining payments. That might be an option but I really don't want to get into another lease (ever again!) so then I am looking at payments on a new car instead of a used one. They will be pretty high since I will have no trade-in. Anybody out there with experience in this area? Thanks.
What I paid for my 2008 Altima 3.5SL sedan
by surfman on Thu Aug 30 19:43:03 PDT 2007
My wife and I took delivery of her loaded 2008 3.5SL last night. What a terrific looking and driving machine. I'm jealous as hell that its not my turn for a new car!! Precision Gray with Charcoal leather interior. We only wanted as options the floor mats and splash/mud guards. Our dealership (suburban Philadelphia,Pa) had a hard time locating one but eventually found one in central New Jersey with the above options and also aluminum kick plates, wind deflector, and the emergency kit package. But the best part is he did not charge us for the extra options. MSRP was $29,625. Dealer invoice was $27,380. We paid $27,000. After taxes, dealer prep, title and new tags, the total was $28,835.89. Needless to say, we are extremely happy and grateful for the hard work they did finding the car we wanted and for the unbelievable deal. We had to take delivery of the car by this Friday or the deal was off. They came through for us. The car only had 51 miles on the odometer when we took delivery. I'd say that's a good trade-off. Now, if my wife will only let me drive it...

Re: Am I paying too much on my 07 Sentra Lease?? [katrinak]
by rasldasl on Mon Feb 26 09:25:59 PST 2007
I don't think so. The advertised lease ($179/month) was for a model without the convenience package and with a lot more down. I leased a Sentra 2.0 SL the same day as you and am paying quite a bit more.
Re: Incentives On 2007 Altimas??

In the Philadelphia region there are incentives on the '07 Altima. Looked at a 3.5SE w/ cvt, sport pkg, flaps, mats and emergency kit. List at $25.3. Dealer disc of $1200 and factory cash of $1200. $399/mo w/$1000 up front. Dealer is still making about $1200.

Not bad. I just don't know how to calculate at 15k/year; everything I have been doing is based on 12k/year. By my calculations, the "$359/mo special" requires $2399 down, of which $2040 is cap reduction and the rest is the first month payment. The special also requires the $550 bank/acquisition fee and the $605 delivery/destination fee. With PA lease/sales tax at 9% on the payments(although I think it is 1% higher in Philly), the monthly payment is roughly $390. Nissan is using a 50% residual value factor. But, that is for a 12k/year lease at 42 months. Also, by my calculations, the special is MSRP at $36335 and the sale price is $33,845. While I have not bought yet (I think the leap will be done on Tuesday; I am still vacillating on nav system), I have been getting 42 month-12k/year quotes down to $100 over invoice, 50% residual factor, and .00045 money factor (which is great). I have also been able to get the dealer to forget all their documentation fees, etc. I am only paying the exact title and license fees, which is about $140 in the Lehigh Valley.
