2014 Chevy Corvette Stingray: L.A. to Detroit Road Trip

2014 Chevy Corvette Stingray

With the Detroit auto show just days away, I've decided to drive our long-term 2014 Chevy Corvette Stingray from Santa Monica all the way to Motown.

Crazy I know. It's snowing out there and a 2,500-mile road trip in a 460-horsepower supercar this time of year just ain't right.

But I have good reason. First of all, you should know that I'm a Vette lover. Our long-term 2002 Z06 (C5) was a favorite of mine, and I would sell my toes to own a ZR1 (C6).

And yet, I'm the only person in the entire world, it would seem, that is not head over heels in love with the new 2014 Corvette. Somehow the car just leaves me cold. And my list of gripes is long, from its odd (too high) seating position, to its slow throttle response, to its pedestrian-looking gauge cluster, to its ugly wheels and taillights, to the strange feel of its electric steering, to its...I could go on.

I'm an idiot I know. Everyone on Earth is in love with this car but me. And that's why I've decided to road trip it.

I want to bond with this car. And to do that I'm going to drive it 2,500 miles across America. Just me. No passenger.

When I arrive in Detroit sometime Sunday I'll either love our Lime Rock Green machine or I'll be very happy to hand its key over to Mike Magrath for the drive back to California.

I'm already on the road, so follow along on Twitter at @RealScottOldham.

Looks like you're taking the 10 to 15 to 70 to 76 to 80 route. The biggest challenge will be getting through the Rocky Mountains west of Denver. Did you guys get snow tires for the 'Vette?

Whoops, ok I missed this post http://www.edmunds.com/chevrolet/corvette-stingray/2014/long-term-road-test/2014-chevy-corvette-stingray-winter-tires.html Glad you guys got winter tires for the journey, good luck and drive safe!

Wow in 3 months' time you guys will have racked up about 13K miles! This might be one of the highest mile 12 month long term test cars. It's going to be a lot of fun but your residual is out the window.

I wonder how the NAV, when confronted with an image of a large chunk of North America, selects which three cities to identify.

legacygt, I was thinking the exact same thing. May as well have shown Albuquerque, St Paul, and Baltimore.

Sorry, Baltimore would be covered by a black rectangle. How about Eugene, OR?

  • This trip is nuts - I did I-70 between Denver and Grand Junction today in an F-150 4x4 with new snows and it was challenging. I passed dozens of spun off cars and some chained up 18-wheelers that were stuck anyway. Unless that Corvette has a lift kit in addition to the snow tires (and maybe chains) I doubt it's going to be in Detroit on Sunday.

  • The problem wasn't falling snow, it was blowing snow - half a mile behind the snow plow there would be 8 inch drifts, and miles of white-out where I intermittently couldn't see anything beyond the windshield wipers....white road, barrier, ditch and sky offered almost no contrast, and then the snow blowing over the barrier and across the windshield was like having a snow blower discharging on the glass.
