Exhausting experience to say the least.
Written by KianaBotz on 10/09/2018
This was such a draining experience, I walked away feeling taken advantage of and completely exhausted from having to fight tooth and nail for every little thing. Drove down from Portland to see a used 4Runner, told the salesmen the amount I had to spend before I got there so there wouldn’t be any wasted time, he told me that he could do that if I came that day. He sent me more pictures in the pictures there was a rack on the vehicle that I asked about and was told that it was included with it, got there and test drove the vehicle, the rack was gone, when I asked him about it he acted confused like he didn’t know what I was talking about, the car had not been detailed yet or had the outside attended to and had some small dings in a couple places on the outside, when asked about this the salesman told me that since they had just received the vechile it hadn’t gotten the chance to go through the whole process they usually do (getting fully detailed, having the dents removed) but was told that this would be taken care of if I bought it. I asked about service and to see the maintenance done on the vechile because the check engine light was on, I was told that the light had gotten left on after they preformed their last service and just needed to be reset, I told him I wanted a mechanic to do a full inspection on it and that I wanted to reiterate that if I did decide to purchase the vehicle it would be detailed and the dents removed because the dents where a big deal to me. I was again told that yes that would happen. Took the vehicle to my mechanic, battery tested bad, the full maintenance hadn’t actually been done on the vechile, just an oil change and that’s why the light was on, there was a bearing that needed to be replaced (few hundred dollars) and a few other minor things. Told the salesman about these things and was told he would speak to his manager about all of it. After going back and forth with the dealership I was told that since I was getting such an “amazing deal” on the car (wasn’t really, car was marked up over $900 than the high end of the fair market range) that they wouldn’t fix any of the problems found but that they would fill up the gas tank for having to drive back and forth so many times between Portland and Albany (already spent $80.00 in gas on top of the inspection cost). After much debating I decided to go to the dealership and continue purchasing the vehicle. After I got there the salesman told me that they would now not be fixing any of the dents, this was a big fight because he had already told me that was going to happen and that was standard for all their pre-owned vehicles. I reminded him of this and he completely ignored me and kept just talking about the paperwork that needed to be done, I finally had to say that I wasn’t going to keep talking about the car if he didn’t address the dents and him telling me they would be fixed along with the vehicle getting detailed (engine was filthy as were all the inside windows) he then tried to tell me that he did not say that. After much deliberation with him, then his manager they would not budge on the dents being removed and told me that they would let me take it to their dent guy and get it fixed at their pricing (gee, thanks). I then had to fight with them about getting the vehicle detailed. The way I was being treated it was like I was coming in there to buy a $1,000 car, this car was $28,000 dollars! At the end of this long ordeal and after much deliberation I decided to buy the vehicle. I was told to leave the car there overnight so they could send it down the road to their detail shop and have it detailed and ready for me first thing the next morning. Next day came around and I headed down, I let them know I was on my way to confirm the car would be ready to go by the time we got there (over an hour drive) got no response until we were about 20 minutes away saying the car wasn’t going to be ready. When we got there the car was in the back of the lot getting cleaned out by some workers and not at the detail shop. Again spent hours at the dealership waiting for them to finish paperwork and get the vehicle ready, which I was told was going to be done and that the paperwork was all done since I spent hours the night before doing the paperwork.. came out to find that my vehicle wasn’t fully detailed, just the engine had been sprayed off, windows cleaned, and mats vacuumed. I was so drained from the days of fighting and spending hours there that I didn’t even have the energy to fight about them promising to have the car professionally detailed at the detail shop. I walked away not even excited that I had a new (to me) car. I was treated the whole time like I was dumb and didn’t know what was going on. My dad is an engineer and mechanic and I actually know more than a lot of people about cars. I also found this dealership through my military car buying program and was very disappointed that this was supposed to be the “special service treatment” for the car buying program. I think the thing that makes me the most mad is being lied to and being told that something was going to happen and then just totally going back on it. The next car I will be buying will be brand new just so I don’t have to deal with any of the used car dealership struggles and it will not be from this dealership.
