Untrustworthy

onMy wife's A4 blew its engine with about 60,000 miles. We had serviced it regularly and were initially told by the service representative that it looked like a timing belt problem and that there should be no problem; Audi should cover the repair completely. All we had to do was OK a tear down to define the damages to get Audis approval. Two days later, the same representative called to say that a defective water pump caused the timing belt to fail and that Audi would not cover it because it was obviously leaking. Smithtown Audi would be happy to fix it for $3000+. In any case, we owed $800 for the tear down. When I asked if it was obvious that it was the water pump and that Audi would not cover it, why take the engine apart? The water pump is visible by just looking in the engine compartment. I told him I would not have approved a tear down if Audi was not going to pay for the repair. He stated that I OKd it and it was tough. We were left with a car whose engine was in pieces with the choice of paying Smithtown over $3000 or paying $800 and taking it someplace else. We chose the latter. I paid the $800, Smithtown Audi dumped the engine parts in a box, very unprofessional, and we took the car to our local repair shop where they rebuilt the engine for $1800. The repair shop told me if Smithtown did not take the engine apart the way they did, I would have saved $200 to $300. The bottom line, do not trust Smithtown Audi.
