My Honda Element was bought here, brought here for almost all service, and damaged by dealer negligence. Catastrophic ball joint failure 2,797 miles after state inspection. Car 'repaired' , asked them to perform complete safety check, picked it up, and brakes not right. Rear brakes and rotors, replaced 2,797 miles ago are shot. More than $3000 in damage to my car. When I asked them to make it right, they offered a free oil change and to machine rear rotors for free. I asked about trading it and was told by sales that they are separate from service and will not loose money on a new car sale because service screwed up.

Dealer Response
Dear Mrs. T, I am very familiar with your situation and am certainly sorry that you experienced a suspension component failure like this. Moreover, I am relieved that you and your family are safe. Unfortunately I must respectfully disagree with your assessment that we are completely at fault because your ball joint failed approximately 3,000 miles and 8-months after inspection. Even though your 2008 Element had approximately 80,000 miles at that time we did not recommend replacement because there was no indication it was needed. Our company policy and overall culture is that we will never sell you anything that is not needed... period. Unfortunately a ball joint is a sealed component and if it does not have excessive free-play (appear loose) upon inspection replacement would not be recommended. We cannot (and will not) suggest repairs just because they may fail based on a vehicle's age and mileage. If we did we would be accused of gouging, which would we never do. Also, keep in mind that we make a living based on selling and servicing cars. Can you imagine the criticism we would experience in being overly aggressive in our repair recommendations?? It's a no win situation. Furthermore, because of your Element's age and mileage one sharp turn, pothole, etc.. could have caused this issue. Finally, after meeting with my staff I understand you are upset and disappointed with our response(s)and offer to help with your situation... so I am not exactly sure where to go from here. Ultimately we feel awful for your experience and would like to help you in some way... but we cannot take responsibility for your vehicle's failed ball joint because sometimes things do break and things do happen no matter how much we try and prevent them.
