No problems with my 2003 HCH "hybrid" battery; but is there something special about the starting or other requirements of the Honda technology that would result in less "starts", years, or mileage in the under the hood battery? Does the Toyota Prius hybrid technology literally "get more mileage" from its under the hood battery?
You mentioned: "Let us hook up the equivalent weight to the 2010 Prius and then see what happens. But then again, I do not know anyone who commutes in a Kenworth, Freightliner or Volvo truck." The technical term is power-to-weight ratio and that pretty well defines hill climbing performance for any vehicle ... even a diesel. You also mentioned: "So Toyota gave the gas engine 22 more HP and 23 more ... Read More
"...There is a very capable fellow Wayne Gerdes that used to post here on a regular basis that has set records with different vehicles including the Prius." I do not have references, but I seem to recall an article he penned, where he got Toyota to pony up for a "so called "performance" Corollla and proceeds to coax 59-63 mpg out of it. Pretty good for a 25 mpg combined rating. ... Read More

I for one am looking forward to the roll out of the GTD either the 2010/2011. Initial indications are @ $18,000. Till that time the only thing that is close and might be off topic is the 2009 Jetta TDI. While we get 39-45 mpg, that has been in break in mode . In some respects the engines (Prius/TDI) are not in the ball park. As such, the reality is more ... Read More

I was just relaying what I have read in Consumer Reports :) I seldom rely on anything any journalist has to say, even Consumer reports. I'll overlook your digs and just pass facts along. Ford is well remembered in my "Past." Unfortunitly back in 2003 when I decided to investigate the hybrid market Ford was nowhere to be seen. Toyota is notoriously zipped-lipped about new offerings unless it suits their purposes to generate new interest. The Prius has a very very loyal owner/fan base that's chomping at the bit to get some tidbit of real data on the next generation. I tell ya. I went through CarsDirect.com in August 2003 and found a dealer who promised me a package 3 Seaside Pearl by October. Now it appears as if I will never get my new car, especially if I don't want it all loaded up with extras. If Toyota advertises the Prius for $20K, but only actually stocks those for $26K, is that not bait-and-switch? A kind of fraud? --P.O.ed in ... Read More
Toyota has increased the target for Year - 2004 from 76,000 to 130,000. http://www.evworld.com/view.cfm?section=communique&newsid=492- 6 This is more than the Prius sold between 1997-2003. Its really a takeoff year. Pretty soon, the extra cost needed to make a hybrid will come down drastically.
Hello, everyone! New forum member here. My husband and I bought our Prius 2004 last year, taking possession just after Christmas. What a wonderful gift it has been! We live in Colorado, in the NW suburbs of Denver. Before we bought the Prius our only car was actually a truck, a '91 Toyota PU, V6 4WD. While most of our driving is very much short run, stop-and-go driving - back and ... Read More
"The test used to determine the city fuel economy estimate simulates an 11-mile, stop-and-go trip with an average speed of 20 miles per hour (mph). The trip takes 31 minutes and has 23 stops. About 18 percent of the time is spent idling, as in waiting at traffic lights or in rush hour traffic. The maximum speed is 56 mph. The engine is initially started after being parked overnight. Vehicles are ... Read More
On Jan 6, 2004, the Prius test expert of EPA (from www.epa.gov) wrote, "Toyota has told us that the 2004 MY Prius (which was redesigned) should achieve fuel economy levels closer to the estimated values." In mid December 2003, a Toyota rep at 1-800-331-4331 said, "Toyota engineers are investigating into the low MPG concern of cold climate. They will have an answer about mid January."
Prius Classic (2000-2003) Prius (2004) I doubt the Prius will stay as soon as the Camry, Highlander, Corolla and RAV4 get hybrids because the Prius, like backy said, is Toyota's showcase for new tecnology.
John "...There is no in-between term. Coin one. We'll use it..." So, this is my suggestion for US Prius: 2001 - 2003 = Prius Mark I (MkI) 2004 - until new body design = Prius Mark II (MkII) This will clarify which version of the Prius we are talking about. This has been done on other boards for "major" changes between both technical and body/cosmetic changes within the same model. Backy...good ... Read More

I ordered my Prius on Oct. 8, 2003, before they had any demos. I got delivery on Nov. 5, 2003. White with package # 7. It came with floor mats additionally, but I would have ordered them anyway. Good salesman, Pete Cogan at Price Toyota. Cost was MSRP but they included three oil changes.
xcel - you are really wrong to compare a Corolla to a Prius. We have a 2003 Corolla LE and a 2004 Prius. The Corolla has NEVER met the EPA mileage, and neither has the Prius yet. But, in comparing the two, The Prius is now averaging 45 mpg and the Corolla 29 mpg. Corolla is a very nice, well built car but does NOT have the room, comfort, safety features, ... Read More
The best built Toyotas are already on the road. Maybe, but you won't convince the people surveyed by J.D. Power & Associates in their recent Initial Quality Surveys. For 2001, 2002, and 2003, Toyota dominated these quality awards, while showing improvement over that timespan. In the 2003 report, J.D. Power noted: Newly launched/redesigned vehicles from Hyundai, Toyota and the Chrysler Group also record better initial quality on average than the models ... Read More
It's not just the Prius; other Toyotas that I have looked at recently have panel alignment problems. And I _do_ consider panel alignment to be a fair measure of build quality. If the manufacture doesn't care what the outside of a vehicle looks like, what sort of build quality do they have in areas that you can't see? I recently looked at five '04 Solaras on a dealer lot. Three of ... Read More
I forgot to mention in my previous post that My Certificate of Origin is dated October 29, 2003. I am a long time Toyota owner having purchased my first one, a Corona many years ago. To Pat... this is a bit confusing. This board is in the Sedans topic. But almost all of the recent discussion is on the '04 Prius, a hatchback. However, there is a separate board in the Hatchbacks topic on the '04 Prius, but it isn't called "Toyota Prius 2004+" to be consistent with other boards that start anew with a new model (like the board on the '04 Sienna), it's "2004 ... W/R/T Virginia's tax credits: The tax advantages of purchasing a Prius or other hybrid here may not be as generous as those of other states, but the value of driving in the HOV lanes is incalculable for residents of Hampton Roads and Northern Virginia (the two areas of the state with HOV restrictions) whose commutes would benefit from using them. Right now I can't afford a new Prius anyway (and am ... Read More

I've heard from several reputable sources that the original US production allotment of 36,000 units has now increased to 41,000 units for the 2004 Prius. I just wish that they'd ship them here sooner! But, the home market has also seen a high demand for the new 2004, so hopefully they've increased production all around, and not just borrowed from one market to help the other... to put the US allotment ... I have noticed that with most Hybrids, Honda and Toyota, it appears that the EPA numbers are somewhat inflated when compared to regular vehicles. I currrently have a 2003 VW Jetta GL/5-speed/ TurboCharged Diesel, that with 27,500 miles my overall average MPG is 55.3. Percentages are 75 highway and about 25% city driving. I drive conversatively but keep up with the regular flow of traffic. Note: My EPA is 50Hwy and ... Read More
