2013 Scion FR-S: Noisy Tires

2013 Scion FR-S

The Yokohama Advan Neova AD08 tires on our 2013 Scion FR-S are getting noisier. They're exhibiting a more constant hum, particularly at elevated speeds on the highway. And the "thunk" over Botts' dots and expansion joints is up a notch or two, as well.

No huge surprise, really. High-performance tires get considerably boomier as they wear. And the FR-S, mostly at the hands of JayKav, has been to several track days, including a couple at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. In other words, these tires have been used, and used hard.

Plus, the Scion's interior isn't big on sound deadening anyway.

But although these Yokohamas have gotten a bit louder, in the grand scheme of wear and track use, they aren't all that bad. For instance, the Dunlop Direzza Star Specs on my own track-day car are louder.

  • Where are the modifications on the FR-S and testing of said mods that we were promised? I've been patiently waiting for a review and further testing of the FR-S following its ECU reflash, but... nothing.

  • "High-performance tires get considerably boomier as they wear." Is that true? Different tires have different noise levels, but I don't believe all high-performance tires get considerably louder as they wear down.

My Kumho max summers have been really quiet and do well in the rain. However, they drop off sorta quickly at the track, which I guess these tires don't do. The less aggressive tires have better noise isolation designed into the tread. This tread is minimal and more focused in performance in dry conditions.

@deanstevenson - I think that was said as a generalization; there will be exceptions. I know my Star Specs got pretty loud. Worth the trade-off when the car is driven aggressively, though.
