I saw this and was reminded of your push for the E-Class to be included on the old HELM board. A little history on the E-Class: W120/W121 1953-1962. Also known as Ponton. W110 "Heckflosse / Fintail", 1959-1968 W114/W115 "Strich-8" 1967-1976 W123, 1976-1985 W124, 1985-1995 My personal favorite E of all time so far, the car I saw so much growing up. It was also the "300E" from this model series that ... Read More

Mercedes-Benz - A short lesson...
Written by: merc1 on Oct 25, 2006 11:41:25 PM
Yes Tag the CLS is a fancy, very fancy E-Class right down to the lugnuts. Such a stunning job they did in converting it huh? The interior uses the same hardpoints as the E, but the materials and trim are different. The big ole plank of wood really sets it off. The small MB SUV will be the GLK, not the MLK. MLK couldn't be used for obvious reasons. Lexusguy, you ... Read More

LS has beaten european helms in every measure except driving dynamics and heritage. In fact in heritage, only mercedes has some kind of distinct superiority. A8 was introduced in 1994 (1997 in North America) and 7-series came about in 1978.

head-to-head with A8 and 7, tremendous value over S550
Written by: stevekilburn on May 4, 2006 8:54:46 PM
Your comment "Your argument is still a campaign to get the most money possible, as YOU see it. That is no longer value" would have been correct if I had said "LS 460 should be priced 82K and 460L should be 86K to match S550" But thats not what I said. I said "LS 460 should be head-to-head with A8 and 7" so actually there is still "TREMENDOUS" value, more than ... Read More

Hi All, I think Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The person who spoke of the Golden Age is the Head Mechanic at my Lexus dealer. Other mechanics have made the same comment. You can argue that there is nicer leather and what not in the 1995+ models and I'll have to agree with you. Mind you the 1995 was very similar to the 1994 mechanically. It had the ... Read More

MB had to drop the price of their cars in 1999 because of price pressure, most notably from Lexus. That was before the quality took a big plunge and before the perception of the quality problems became real. This isn't totally correct. Mercedes dropped prices of the S-Class in 1999 (for the 2000 MY) because the previous car was seen as too big, overweight and too expensive in certain markets so ... Read More

300E
Written by: merc1 on Nov 10, 2005 9:18:27 PM
Well guys I didn't say that the 300E was "inspiring" or that it was better than Audi's styling at the time. I said that it was the car that got me interested in the Mercedes-Benz brand. Compared to the brand of car I liked most then the 300E was very much different. I had already known about and liked Audi before really having anything to do with a Mercedes. Secondly, bland, ... Computers are no magic any more these days! They may not be magic to kids who are born today, but I like many others have put some serious time in the trenches before the computer epoch. Because of this and remembering what my field went through in the transition period between 1984 and 1994, computers never cease to amaze me. I have up to 10 apps open simultaneously throughout the course ... Read More

please read my posts more carefully...I said just because you, and by you I mean the soldiers of the Toyota army who post here, can spend more on a car than the LS costs, but choose not to, doesn't mean everyone else in this market has the same option. A $60-65k LS can probably be leased in the $800's per month. An S430 average lease (36 months, 15k per year) is ... Read More

If MB is so safe, why did Princess Diana die? I bet she would survive if she were in a Lexus. I was waiting for someone to bring that up :) If you knew any of the details, you would know that this only proves how safe MB is. Let me explain: The 1994 S-Class that Princess Diana was riding in had the most advanced safety features and structural design of ... Read More

Even if we disregard countless Mercedes innovations and only include those introduced since 1989 Mercedes STILL trumps Lexus by a wide margin. Virtually every safety feature in every Lexus car ... This is amazing. (Last Post) "In your previous post the chart showed 700+ units and you said that was US sales???? I accept 1700+ for the SL500....Allante sold 6700 in 93." No chart or link I ever posted said anything like that. Period. It said (they MBUSA.COM) said 1721 sales for 1993. End of story. You said 700 or 800 in your confused state. Mike I'm going to do this point by point so you don't get any more confused. "When I talked about 250 HP that was for Pre 1993...Since I am sticking to comparing 93 Allante to 93 SL500 in order to try and avoid your dancing around issues by switching between models and year." Ok pre-1993, you mean from the 1987-1992 models right? The 500SL came out for 1990 Mike and it ... Read More

It is painfully obvious that you don't have a clue about the Mercedes SL. You seem to be the only one that is "confused" here. Everyone else has pretty much agreed that the SL was the superior car. The question is whether or not the Allante is so lame that its sole supporter is reduced to harping about trunk space over a decent top design, you know something that most people ... Read More

Mike you constantly mention things that have no logic. We're talking about price and sales and how they relate, you mention that "America has chosen with their wallets". You're right that is simple and takes no thought to reach that conclusion. Until you bring a logical point to the table why would I bother. Simplistic is right. Well, since the S430 costs 31% more than the LS430, is 9% slower 0-60, has 5% less HP and 8% less torque, it had better be "superior" in SOME ways to SOME people, else MB would sell zero units. Hands down, MB wins in sheer prestige. Aesthetics are a personal judgement, and in my personal opinion the S does offer more attractive exterior styling (but not necessarily interior). As far as ... No one car is for everybody. But I'm curious if you saw this letter in the most recent AutoWeek: "I have owned three E-Class Mercedes: a 1990, a 1994 and a 1998 4Matic. Thank you. Well as far as the C looking like the S, it's always been that way. The previous C from 1994-2000 looked just like the S-Class from 1992-1999 (the infamous W140-Tanks) the 190E looked like the 420/560SEL's of the day. The previous C, especially at night was almost impossible to tell from the 1999 S-Class if the car was coming from behind you. Now granted the new C is an ... Read More

Mercedes-Benz initiated a Displacement-Badging system, but in 1994, so the "e320, e420, e430, e55, s300, s320, s420, maybe s430, s500, s560, s600 and don't get me started on the, C, ML, SL" don't count. The 300e switched to a 3.2L engine in 1993, but retained the "300" part of the name, and the 400e NEVER had a 4.0L V8 engine. As you can see, the Mercedes-Benz model line roughly followed displacement-badging, ... Read More
