2014 Mazda CX-5: Finally, a Bike Rack

2014 Mazda CX-5

The 2014 Mazda CX-5 is a well-packaged crossover SUV. Even-so, there's no way to put two bikes, four people and a bunch of gear inside for a road trip. Our solution was the Mazda Accessories trailer hitch.

It allowed the bikes to sit on a hitch-mount rack we already had. This, we're convinced, is the best way to haul bikes if you've got to do it outside the car. They're out of the path of road debris and you're probably not going to remove them by accidentally driving under something too short.

Are your bikes particularly large or is it the camera angle? They look like the dwarf the CX-5!

I hate the fact it causes errors in my BSM system. I get false alerts from the bikes in the back.

I turn my BSM off when I have my bike on the back.... No big deal. Its best to not get to lazey..... BSM is great but ... just sayin.

WTH is BSM? So hanging bikes on the back obscuring lights and the number plate is OK with law enforcement in your neighbourhood?

Can you open the tailgate with the bikes on? That would be a big strike against it from a road trip perspective.

Hitch racks also have the problem of accessing the rear hatch and only carrying 2 bikes (1.5 hitches) so what to the the other 2 people ride? They also block the license plate and tail lights which can result in a ticket from law enforcement. Carefull backing up and don't parallel park either. Any parking lot might become a problem with the extra 3 feet tacked onthe end. How about throw them on the roof rack... oh that's right you didn't take the Impreza.

How does this type of hitch-mount rack affect reverse camera/sensors?
