2014 Mazda CX-5: Any Idea What This Is?

2014 Mazda CX-5

Does this look familiar to you? It doesn't to me. It's on the left side of the dashboard in our 2014 Mazda CX-5 just behind the turn signal stalk. It looks like some kind of infrared receptor along with a possible opening for a connector.

I flipped through the owner's manual and found no references to it. In fact, most of the diagrams didn't even show it was there. Seems odd that Mazda would use a relatively visible area of the dashboard for something that's not used by the driver. Could have put a change drawer there.

After consulting with the Edmunds' brain trust, I was informed that it was likely the SD-card slot for updating the navigation system. In our long-term Mazda 3, it resided in an equally mysterious door right in the middle of the dash. So in a way, the location in our CX-5 signals progress of sorts.

It is indeed the SD card for the Nav unit.

  • It is also an attempt at a really good idea. That part in that area is the Navigation hardware. On models that didn't come with Nav there is a little cubby there that you just pop out and for around $500 you just pop the Nav unit into that spot and instantly you have Nav on the radio screen. I hear the Nav has some overly intrusive safety features that make it harder to use but it is a great idea having it where you can add Nav to non-Nav models for a decent price.

There actually is a change drawer there if you don't have the nav system, although it could be better designed - no rubber insert and it's kind of shallow. Good place to stick gum wrappers though.

Wow I can't believe this update. Seriously? infrared? LOL. It's the nav unit. There's a door, slide it to the left and the SD card is there. Take it out and stick it in a computer, load TomTomHome software to update your GPS Maps and other stuff. Doubt you guys have done that yet. Here's the unit for sale, you can see the whole unit. http://www.amazon.com/Genuine-Mazda-Accessories-KD37-79-EZX-Navigation/dp/B0083X7HV6

Sorry I mean, slide it to the right to open the SD card door.

How is that not in the manual? Is there a separate nav manual?

    NSA mandated data port.

  • gloss, zimtheinvader, and nxtiak are correct. This is part of the navigation unit, where the SD card is stored.

It is the where the SD card is stored for the GPS. Did you get a demonstration when you picked up the CX-5?

  • erictreese erictreese Posts:

There is a smart guide and a nav manual.

I asked the sales rep during a test drive and they said it is a port to update the navigation system.
