2013 Hyundai Santa Fe Long-Term Road Test

2013 Hyundai Santa Fe: Real-World Brake Test

October 10, 2013

2013 Hyundai Santa Fe

The Nissan Versa in front of me on the exit ramp stopped short, and I stood on the 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe's brake pedal.

"Yes!" I thought as the SUV immediately responded to my abrupt request to save its front end.

Occasions like this compel me to look up our instrumented testing results as soon as I'm able. I like to know right away, while the experience is fresh in my mind, how the vehicle performed on the test track.

Our rating section says our long-term Santa Fe hauled down from 60-0 mph in 125 feet, which only earned it a "B" or Average rating from our test group.

But for its performance on the Cloverfield Avenue exit ramp this morning, I give it a solid "A."

I'm glad that you didn't get in an accident, but the Santa Fe's braking performance is good, not spectacular. In fact that rating of B is pretty accurate since it did it in less than the Flex but more than the CX-9. That being said, it is worth noting that all of the vehicles' braking numbers fall into a small margin, 123ft to 127ft.

Better pads and tires and I bet you could shave a few feet off the stopping distance.

Glad the brakes got the job done for you. Just checked and Edmund numbers for the Versa's 60-0 is 128 ft. so that worked out in your favor. @quadricycle: I bought my CX-9 in 2009 and cross-shopped everything. At the time, the brakes on the Honda Pilot were downright scary. I think it stopped from 60 in closer to 150 ft. I don't know if that's improved in recent years.

@legacygt: Wow, you weren't kidding about the 150ft braking distance, that's horrendous! I just looked up the CX-9 and Flex braking numbers and assumed the rest would follow suit. I should know better... Anyway the Pilot is now at 130ft, much better, but

Ford and Honda tend to have disappointing brakes. But remember kids, your brakes are only as good as those on the car behind you.
