2014 SLP Panther Camaro: Hand Wash Only

March 24, 2014

2014 SLP Panther Camaro

Our long-term 2014 SLP Panther Camaro is not car-wash friendly. As some clothing is labeled "dry clean only" this 600-hp muscle car should be labeled "hand wash only".

As we've learned over the last few months, the Camaro's huge rear tires are just too wide for the track that pulls the car through the automated wash cycle and its aggressive front air dam is too low for the same mechanisms. So potential owners of special Camaros, SLP Panthers or otherwise, should enter that ownership anticipating the additional time and cost of hand washes, which can be significant.

In Los Angeles, many of the automated car washes, which use the track to pull the car through, are actually hand washes. Inside the building are very wet men with power hoses and soapy mitts. No spinning paint killers and oscillating mirror removers.

Such is the case with our local car wash in Venice, CA, where a "basic car wash" costs $10.99. At the same location a static hand wash performed off to the side on our big-tire Camaro costs $25.00. And it adds about 15 minutes to the process.

Of course, all of this is avoided by a good old fashioned DIY job.

I have this issue with my Raptor, I only spray wash in the winter when it get's really dirty and hand wash if the weather is nice.

Why would anyone want to run their car through a car wash? CA may have "cleaner" car washes than the NE, but the thought of those dirty brushes and harsh chemicals attacking my paint gives me the shivers. You pay enough for your car why not treat it like it cost you $30K? In the Camaro's case double that. IMO

  • ocramidajzj, because then you can get those really fun swirls in the paint that catch the sunlight so beautifully ;/

So having your black car washed outside, in the full sun, in Southern California, costs $25. Even in March, the surface temp on this car, sitting where that one is sitting, is probably north of 140 degrees. And then they hit it with 70 degree water. Wonderful.

As an enthusiast, washing my car is one of my favorite "escapes". Nothing like a good 4 hour wash and wax on a Saturday morning.

zimtheinvader: Yeah, love those swirls on black paint. Sooooo Purrrty. Pakohotdogs: Couldn't agree with you more. I sometimes wonder how "enthusiastic" Edmunds staffare about the cars they have on loan/buy. I know it's not their car but cmon, If I had a job like that I'd be treating the car like my own. No doubt manufacturers like it when their cars are well-treated. Good PR I would think.

$10.99 early bird hand washed. What an excellent deal!

Cjsg35; too bad for your uncle, love mine, no regrets, no remorse. I have an affinity for Corvettes, however I feel Chevy has gone too far on European stylying on the Vette for my taste. One day I hope to own a vintage Vette, but for now I'll enjoy my Panther.
