2013 Cadillac ATS: Steering Wheel Audio Controls

May 6, 2013

2013 Cadillac ATS

File this under the Minor Gripes category. But I don't find the steering wheel audio controls on the 2013 Cadillac ATS 2.0T intuitive.

Two problems: First, having the up/down radio volume buttons on opposite sides of the cumbersome SEL button is just odd. To me it would make more sense to have the up/down buttons on the same side of SEL, with my first choice being below it as that's easier to get to.

Turns out, I adjust the stereo volume quite a bit (who knew?) so this non-intuitive setup stands out to me.

Second, the overly protruding SEL button is just odd in general, as you have to raise your thumb to reach over it.

Again, in the grand scheme of things, not a big deal. But still odd nonetheless.

I prefer volume control to be a rocker switch anyway. I think the controls on my Miata nailed it. One rocker for volume, another rocker for preset/track selection, one button for mode, and another button for mute. Couldn't be more intuitive.

  • Why does GM put the audio controls on the right side of the steering wheel. I thought it was near universal that audio is on the left and cruise control is on the right.

^^I believe Ford has the audio on the right, so perhaps it's an American thing.

Actually, Japanese cars have the audio on the left because in a right-hand drive configuration it is closest to the stereo, as it is in a Ford and GM.

German cars also put the audio controls on the left.

So, actually only the Germans are out of sync, because American and Japanese autos place the audio controls toward the center (in their native configurations).
