DETROIT — The 2013 Cadillac ATS won the 2013 North American Car of the Year prize, while the 2013 Ram 1500 was named 2013 North American Truck of the Year at the kickoff of the 2013 Detroit Auto Show.

The 2013 Cadillac ATS beat the 2013 Ford Fusion and 2013 Honda Accord for the top car prize. The Cadillac win is seen as validation for General Motors as it continues to remake itself after a federally led bankruptcy.

The 2013 Ram 1500 beat the 2013 Ford C-Max and 2013 Mazda CX-5 for the top truck/utility prize.

The results were a major coup for Detroit automakers, which were shut out of the top prizes last year. The 2012 NACTOY winners were the 2012 Hyundai Elantra and 2012 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque. The last time that Detroit automakers swept the awards was in 2011, when the Chevrolet Volt and Ford Explorer were the winners.

To be eligible for the awards, a vehicle must be all new or substantially changed. The awards are given by a group of 49 automotive journalists from Canada and the U.S.

Edmunds says: Congratulations to Chrysler and GM for coming out on top in a tough field of contenders.
