Do your homework before you go

I was in the market for a late model Impreza in a certain price range. They had 2 I went to drive them, and possibly purchase the car,. The salesman was genuinely nice and actually it was a fun set of test drives. When we showed interest, we were turned over a "manager" to negotiate. After 15 minutes of telling us how the maket value was bla bla bla and so forth, he started at a price about $500 higer than the internet price. Being that our credit scores are both over 800 my wife and I just shrugged at each other and put on the boxing gloves ready for 15 rounds with the manager. I didn't have to have that car, so walking out was an option and they knew it. They knew we could go anywhere and buy anything we wanted, as we had brought a preapproved loan from our credit union with us. Well after a bloody battle ( only kidding- I had a great time sparring with them) we agreed on a price below the internet price, and they agreed to fix some items of concern. They also got us a loan rate lower than the credit union, which really surprised me. Apparently, one they realized that I wasn't taking any BS from them, they caved. Next came the finance lady,to do the loan and title and try to sell you a warrranty and... this is a new one to me : NITROGEN TIRE FILLING for $69.00 !! I basically said take that crap out of the tires and put air in them. I can check the tires myself. In summary, I got the car I wanted at reasonable price, all of the staff were freindly, courteous and respectful. They were doing their job to upsell me, I was doing my job to fend them off. Again- do your homework and don't go in there unarmed or they will get you. If you don't mind the battle, they will cave in and give you what you want. P.S. Turns out the "manager " was one of the owners, which I found out later in the finance office. Pretty funny, since we were only buying a used car.
