Refusal to repair damage caused by service technicians
Written by rgrogge on 08/24/2012
My 2005 Mini Cooper had a glove compartment lock cylinder which came out with the key when locking or unlocking the glove compartment. The glove compartment door worked well (the door opened and closed/latched). The lock itself worked without any problem. It locked & unlocked as it should. The only problem was that the lock cylinder would come out when removing the key unless it was manually held in. On 8/21/12 I took my Mini into the Jackie Cooper - Edmond service center to have the oil changed, the driver's side door latch looked at for opening difficulty, a rear fender reflector replacement and I mentioned the glove compartment cylinder issue (with the caveat that I didn't want to spend much to get it fixed, because it worked correctly, except for the cylinder being loose). I received a call from the service dept. around 4:00 pm. They had not been able to get the oil changed yet, and wanted to keep the car another day. They also quoted the price for replacing the glove compartment latch, replacing the door cable, replacing the rear fender reflector, the oil change and also quoted a price for new front brakes (they said the brakes were at "minimum"). Since I couldn't leave the car overnight, I picked the car up (to their credit, they waived the $110 "inspection" charge for looking at the door). When I got home, I tried to open the glove compartment door and it wouldn't open. I tried unlocking, but the latch just didn't open the door. I called Sean @ Jackie Cooper service and made an appointment for the following morning. Next morning, I waited about 20 min., while Sean took my car to the technicians to look at the glove compartment door. When he brought the car back he said it was broken and the solution was to leave the glove compartment door open ("don't close it because you can't get it open"). How ridiculous is that!! My position is that someone at Jackie Cooper broke the glove compartment latch, so that it was inoperable (I assume unintentionally). It worked when I brought the car in (door opened/closed, locked/unlocked). Taylor Blevins' (Mini Service Manager) position is that the lock was broken (because the cylinder would come out) when I brought the car in and he was not going to repair/replace it. We argued for about 20 minutes ("it worked when I brought the car in-it was broken when I took the car home" vs. "it was broke when you brought the car in"). Taylor finally agreed to pay for the installation labor, if I would pay for the part ($180.00). I initially agreed to the compromise, but upon further reflection, I decided that I wasn't going to pay for any part of the repair. I feel that Jackie Cooper should fix what they broke.
