2013 Subaru BRZ: Dome Light Left On

March 28, 2013

2013 Subaru BRZ

This morning I walked out to our 2013 Subaru BRZ and found the dome light left on. At the time I had no way of knowing how long it was lit. So I hustled upstairs, grabbed the key and climbed inside.

The fact that the light was still on seemed like a good omen, I rationalized, as I crossed my fingers and pressed the start button. It chugged briefly before turning over. It must be my luck day. I was half looking forward to push starting the Subaru, but I'm glad it didn't need to happen. After a handful of interrogations, I learned that the light was on for a few hours prior to me seeing it. Tragedy averted.

Are you sure it wasn't just the approach lighting?: http://www.edmunds.com/subaru/brz/2013/long-term-road-test/2013-subaru-brz-limited-approach-lighting.html

My 1995 Pontiac Sunfire had battery rundown protection, you would think a 2013 anything would.

EXCELLENT question, stovt001. Sounds to me like the only way to tell if the dome light has been left on, in conditions other than complete darkness (where you can see it from far away) is to deliberately leave the key fob behind and walk up to the car to look. And you know those occasions when you DID have the light on, you leave the car in a parking lot or garage, and then a couple steps away it occurs to you that you might have left it on - ? You have to make sure you get outside the fob's trigger range, lay the key fob down on the ground or maybe the hood of a nearby car or the base of a light standard, and go back to check. It's off? Great - go get the fob and go on your way. It's on? Go back and get the fob AGAIN so the you can get the car unlocked, return to the car, get in, turn the light off, lock the car, and go on with what you are doing. Total PIA and law of unintended consequences strikes again. I will take approach lighting that turns on when I turn it on, thanks.

If they would have only used a $5 LED bulb it could be on for days before it would run down the battery.
