Saturn=mystery oil loss??? Help

Need diagnostic assistance. My daughters 2001 SL2 was purchased new and has always been on synthetic oil. It has 109,000 miles on it and is loosing oil. I can find it just inside the tail pipe with a rag but its not smoking or blowing smoke at start-up. I tested the compression per OEM maintenance manuals (I work on everything I own) and it was 105 to 110 at all four ... Read More

Ok here is the thing.....My service engine light came on. Got the oil changed, it went off. Then it came back on and did not go off. This is when all the problems started. Loud Noise

I have a 2001 Saturn SL. It has started making a loud noise when I put it into reverse. It also does it occasionally when I am driving. We have checked all the mounts and the transmission seems to be fine. Anyone that has any ideas let me know.

As far as the braking system, this could be something to have checked but I can tell you the brakes on my last Saturn (2001 SL1) were very soft and required alot of pressure on the brake pedal for effective stops. My girl friend leased a new Saturn 2001 SC2 and has had major problems with this vehicle and the Saturn dealer and Saturn motor division. The 1st Problem was the recall for the fuel switch. The closest thing I can come up with is my 2001 SL1's brake pedel pulsated when I was braking from around 50mph or so, and the steering wheel would shake a bit. The rotors were warped and were resurfaced for free at Saturn. Let me know how everything worked out...

Despite what some people may tell you here (for most people only post issues when they are problems) Saturn's S Series line of cars have been rated above average in consumer reports for years, scored well in initial quality according to JD Power & Associates back in the 96-98 model years. After visiting my dealer today, I was informed that my rotors warped (front)at 11,000 miles. They were resurfaced for free, and I hope to get another 20,000 miles out of them. So, while Im not happy in regards to needing the rotors resurfaced, I understand that things happen. So, Im still looking at the altima, jetta, and now the 2003-4 L Series.

My Saturn experience is as follows, in regards to my 2001 S Series I can say that my 1998 SL had better build quality than my 2001. The 2001 hasn't had any problems except for what I believe is warped brake rotors. Until the 1998 model year when Saturn redesigned their altenator you could pretty much count on neededing a new one every 60K miles. This is no longer a problem. As for leaking oil - that has never been a problem. Before the 1999 model year "some" Saturns would burn oil. Don't qoute me, but I believe the first generation Saturn's (91-95) used conventional antifreeze/coolant. Im not sure when Saturn started using dexcool, but contacting a Saturn retailer, or calling 1 800 554 6000 (Saturn Customer Assistance Center) would be a good start. I took possession of my 2001 Saturn SL1 last night. So far so good... Needless to say, I had the most pleasant buying experience, EVER!!!! Everyone was very professional and friendly, right down to the service staff, and even the car wash staff!!! What can I say, I think I'm hooked.

Saturn has made improvements to thier original car line, quieter engines in 1999, better pricing on MSRP, and options for 2001. I drove a Saturn for the first time today. It was a 2001 5 speed SL2 model. Although it performed adaquately, I noticed that to shift into all gears, the "feel" of it was not smooth, maybe "notchy" if that is a word? Do any of you that drive manual Saturns notice that it is not a smooth shifting trans? Your opinions will be appreciated.

I reread the August Popular Mechanics and it gave 2001 as the year Saturn loses its transmission and 'gains' GM's 4-speed automatic and at a later time loses its engine and 'gains' GM engines hence it becomes just another GM. :(
