If the name is not important to you and you like the looks of the Merc, you can actually save money by going with the Mountaineer. That's my experience. I'm on my 3rd Exploder and none of them were branded "Ford Explorer". The first was a Mazda Navajo (2 door Explorer Sport) that had a better price, option package, and warranty than Ford. The 2nd was a 1998 Mountaineer. At the ... Read More

Hi all I have tried searching this forum for an answer to my problem but came up empty so hopefully one of you can help point me in the right direction. • Squeaky brakes

    Written by: suvb4winter on May 2, 2005 5:11:07 AM

We've had this as a persistent problem with our 1998 Mercury Mountaineer for awhile now. Brakes make a high pitched squeal all the time, even after brakes, rotors and pads have been replaced(more than once). We've used the Lincoln/Mercury dealer as well as a private mechanic. Any advice would be appreciated.

My wife and I are looking at a new suv. This will be primarily her car. She will be trading in her loaded 1998 Chevrolet Blazer LT for a new vehicle. We were satisfied enough to consider another vehicle from GM. I guess we were lucky because I hear that some Blazers weren't as reliable as others. We had no problems, except the usual wear and tear. She definitely wants something ... Read More

I just picked up my 2002 Mountaineer yesterday. Silver Frost, AWD, convenience group, luxury group, V8, moonroof, side curtain airbags. I factory ordered it on Sept 7. Very nice SUV. I got a "great" deal . . . I had a 1998 Explorer XLT 4WD that I bought new in August 1998. It was a decent truck but I did have some problems with it, including an ongoing musty smell in ... • Wrong Front End Covers from Ford!!!

    Written by: jpage7 on Sep 11, 2001 1:01:15 PM

After two months, I finally acquired a "Mercury Accessories" catalog to order a front end cover for my '02 Mountaineer. I had my local dealer place the order for me using the Part # provided and the part returned is for a 1998 Mountaineer. This has happended on three separate occasions and I'm stumped (as the dealer is) on how to resolve it. Part 19A414 is specified in the book. Don't ... Read More
