2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster Long-Term Road Test

2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG: The Keys Need More Buttons

2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

As Jason Kavanagh noted last week, our long-term 2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster has Keyless Go, but it's missing keyless entry. I'll take it a step further and say that I think it's missing two other features on the keys.

Specifically, Remote Start and a remote convertible top. The only thing that would make the brutal, snarling V8 startup better than it already is, would be the ability to hear it on approach. The added utility of allowing the interior to cool down without you sweating on the expensive leather seats is practical, too. Putting the top down remotely would be purely for showing off, but that's already half the reason you get this car anyways.

If I can spend $600 on an alarm system that integrates remote start on my 18-year-old Acura (the other key in this photo), Mercedes can surely include it on its flagship roadster.

What's the age of an average Mercedes buyer, and more than that SLS buyer? That's probably why you don't see even more buttons on that "key". It might also be why the SLS doesn't have keyless entry. After a lifetime of locking doors, its sometimes hard to trust that the car will lock and unlock itself. I bet that's the reason the key fob has to be inserted in, and not just left in your pocket: Some people are just more comfortable using a key as they've always used one, same as the locks.

Age aside, Benz owners are a discerning bunch and appreciate luxury touches. My BMW 135 convertible has all these remote features (except remote start) and it's very handy. A Benz at nearly 4x the price should have them, too.

given this car's propensity to grenade its top... this may be a wise omission.

Remote start on your Acura? Please don't tell me it's an automatic...

Try this: Point the fob at the driver's door handle key slot and hold the unlock button. On the SLK the caution lights flash and the roof starts to go down. Hold the lock button to get it to go up.
