2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG: The Best Time To Drive

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

On a recent Sunday evening, I didn't have much to do. No dishes to wash, no kids to deal with. I could have sat around, loaded up a bowl of popcorn and watched basketball. But then I realized: It's really nice outside. The sun is setting. And I have a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG in my garage.

So I quickly grabbed the key and headed out to some back roads near my house. With the cool air swirling around the open cockpit, the rumbling V8 filling my ears, the car sweeping from corner to corner, and the sunset bursting with color, it truly was the best way to experience our SLS.

The hour before sunset is known by some as the golden hour. At the end of a warm day it is certainly the most pleasurable time to drive a convertible. Toward sundown the boundaries of the car all but disappear. The black hood (see my name-- my ride is obvs black) merges with the blacktop. The windshield becomes an art box framing the road unwinding ahead. And with no roof, there's nothing but the sky above. Hawks perching atop telephone poles snap their heads in double takes as I blaze past. This is what it's like to fly.

Yesterday I had to gas up and get groceries, but the weather was beautiful so I threw the top down, dialed up the Angels game on the radio, and it was a perfect little evening.
