2014 Kia Cadenza: Adaptive (Curve-Following) Front Lighting System

January 9, 2014

2014 Kia Cadenza

Our 2014 Kia Cadenza Limited has AFLS or Adaptive Front Lighting System as standard equipment. Like our long-term Mazda CX-5, the headlamps do a very good job of following the steering input for bends in the road.

Sorry, my daughter hams it up a bit too much, and it wasn't as foggy a day as it was when I recorded the Mazda, but you get the idea. Pretty neat tech for not that much money.

Brilliant. Does Adaptive mean cornering, or dusk-sensing, or high beam canceling? "Bendy" is the solution!

That feature sounds good on paper, but I'm not sure I could get used to swiveling lights - I find it sort of annoying to have the light density changing in my field of view. It's like following someone in the dark, but they're the one holding the flashlight. Maybe it's better as the driver, instead of watching a video.

Sounds like a sweet kid Chris. @gslippy: I actually like the feature, and don't find it annoying it all. I really like the system that some MBs have, where the high beam hotspot will actually swivel depending on steering input. Very neat. Now, if we could get the new adaptive high beams that have been developed in Europe allowed here in North America, that would be fantastic. In case you don't know what they are, they keep the high beam on all the time, but the car has a camera that detects other vehicles and doesn't shine the light a them. Very cool.

The feature is easily turned off by moving the switch to the headlights on position.
