Dealership Sales Review

2.3 out of 5 starssales Rating
Turned off by high dealer fees
Written by rhacknc on 02/01/2008
Went to look at a 2004 low mileage Alero for my son. Car was advertised for $7990. I thought it was a fair asking price based on similiar vehicles I looked at for sale on-line. I was ready o make a deal and was presented with a writeup with all costs. Documentation Fees: $495.00 Reconditioning Fee: $650.00 The salesman explained the reconditioning fee was the costs it took the dealership to get the vehicle ready for sale. What a load of baloney. Needless to say I walked out of there quickly. Once a dealer starts with those crazy fees it tells me alot about them. Randy Marion advertises as the "Price Leader". He sure is the price leader, in doc fees and crazy reconditioning fees.

You gotta realize this sales guys. Include it into the sticker price. Don't add fees on after the customer has decided to buy the car. I don't buy this "they think they should get something for nothing" crap. Be upfront about it. Proves that your lousy salesmanship is the reason you're selling cars instead of making corporate deals.

Thank you!!! It does need to be said. So many buyers nowadays think that they need to negotiate down to nothing to buy a car... DEALERS NEED TO MAKE SOME MONEY... True if the price is outrageously high i understand some discount, however the dealer has the same bills as the consumer and has to pay employees. So I believe a dealership that shows you and charges you the cost of reconditioning a vehicle that you are about to purchase is not outrageous. Now if they had just thrown that $650 in the price of the Alero and charged you $8649 (which is what most dealerships do)you probably wouldn't have even came to look. And at least you know they took the time and energy to make sure you were driving a clean, safe, dependable vehicle.

I am a ex-car salesman so call me what you wish but I just read this garbage and decided I needed to say something. To the individual who wrote this. You obviously are not business minded. And like a lot of car buyers today. You think you are suppose to get something for nothing. !. It does not matter what car dealership you go to. (You are going to pay a Doc Feee. 2. If you are buying a used vehicle. Yes there are cost involved from the dealers standpoint to sell a used vehicle. When a dealer buys a used car. It is just that. A used car. They have to put the vehicle in the shop to make sure it is running properly. If it needs tires they put tires on it. If it needs paint work they pay for that. I have seen shop bills to the dealere for over $1400.00. So that baloney of 600 you were talking about is actually low. The vehicles also have to be inspected. All of this stuff is cost to the dealer so what are you thinking. 3. The car business is just that a BUSINESS!!! There are two major purchases people make in their lives. Houses and Cars. Are you gonna tell your mortgage broker you dont want to buy the house because of this fee and that fee. Dealers are in business to make a profit just like every other business on the face of the earth. There is mark-up in everything you buy from a pack of gum to a t-shirt. It is called profit and that is what makes the world go round. If you want to get a car for what the dealer gets it for then I suggest you go find a lot. Get your dealers license. And then when you buy a car at auction you pay for whatever needs to be paid for. I wonder if you have ever bought jewelry before. Do you know there is almose a 300% mark-up in that. I bet you dont complain about that profit and they are raping you. Enough said for me. All I am going to say is stop trying to make dealers out to be bad people. Back in the day you had a lot of dealers who were shady and things like that. But now the federal government makes statutes to guide everything out there. Banks are only going to loan a certain amount of money on a particular vehicle. So unless your pockets are fat enough to pay cash. Nobody is taking advantage of you. If you want to complain about fees. Complain to your local doctor or attorney.
