    GLI performance bargain

    VW Fun, 06/27/2023
    2015 Volkswagen Jetta GLI SE 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 6M)
I've owned this car (2015GLI SEL 6 spd manual) for 8 years and it has been phenomenal. 63K mile daily commuter with literally zero mechanical issues. Routine fluid changes only. While it may have some economy car roots, over 8 years that has turned out to be a benefit. Seats show no wear, there are hard plastics that reviewers reeled against and perhaps so, but they show no wear. The car … has averaged almost 36 mpg over 63K miles...and there is plenty of spirited driving in that, but roll into a 5 over speed limit commute and it will reach 40 mpg (yes, substantially over the 33 mpg hwy rating). Quibles: Loved the Fender audio, but the RNS-315 radio was outdated at the start. I picked up a non-nav VW radio for $225 that added apple car play/Android auto. It interfaced with the outstanding Fender system no issues. Screen is bigger but frankly still dated, but have google maps that I can see, and great sound. These cars are highly tunable and while I'm not an advocate of killing reliability to create a 300+hp torque steer monster, I did add a power module which simply enables a few psi additional boost. Now runs about 245hp and 265lb-ft torque. Just enough to make the car feel very spritely. Best of both worlds. Additional power when needed but no compromise to mpg and reliability long-term - just don't spend every shift at redline...For tire change, shifted to Michelin pilot sports A/S's. Substantially improved grip, limit handling and road feel over the OEM Pirellis, but did compromise about 1 mpg overall. Get the SEL with the HID adaptive lights - No pun, light years improvement over base lights. Appreciate the Blind Spot Monitoring but wish it had bumper sensors which they added to the GLI in 2016. Wish VW would have incorporated the E-limited slip on this car. Rare that I would need it but it would be nice to have. bottom line, this is a really good, fun to drive, not luxury but comfortable, durable (if you treat it right), under the radar sports sedan that has plenty of room for three friends, lots of luggage or groceries.
