CX-7s are fun to drive, owing to nimble handling, a responsive transmission, accurate steering and strong brakes. The engine produces good acceleration, but isn't the strongest one in this class and requires premium fuel. The available all-wheel-drive system works well in the snow and on washboard dirt roads, but isn't intended for serious off-roading.
Drivers of a wide range of sizes can get comfortbale behind the wheel of the CX-7. Once underway, the ride, while on the firm side, isn't overly harsh. Wind and road noise are average.
The CX-7's interior is simple and the major controls are easy to use and laid out in such a way to give the impression of a sporty car, rahter than an SUV. The shift lever location and operational logic are excellent. Some might dislike the bi-level central dash, which separates the radio display, for example, from the volume and tuning knobs. Thoughtful touches abound, such as the purse-sized center console storage compartment and the rear seat fold levers that can bre released from the hatch. The sporty rear roofline limits cargo space to an adequate, but not class-leading size.
The CX-7 looks sporty and distinctive, inside and out. The look and feel of the controls, fabrics, and surfaces is above average for this segment.
High Performer
For an SUV of its kind, the CX-7 is fun to drive and capable on winding roads.
Daily Commuter
The CX-7's maneuverabilty and high seating position make it a good choice for bumper to bumper traffic, and its fun if you get clear road ahead of you. Many commuter friendly features are either standard or available.
Off-Road Ready
Lacking a low-range transfer case, the CX-7 is not for serious off roading. Nevertheless, it has the clearance and AWD capability to go where ordinary sedans and minivans cannot, and is a good choice for snowy areas.
