Does anyone here live in Houston, TX? Why are all the dealers charging 15K+ for a 2008 Elantra auto + A/C + radio? I read that some guy in NY got this for 13K. Right now the car industry is doing terrible in Texas, with Toyota seeing a 24% decline in full-year profits. You’d think they’d be bending over backwards to make deals.

Chris - I bought mine at Fairfax Hyundai and got a great price. The service was okay (not stellar, but certainly not bad) and they had a large inventory for what I wanted and were able to beat my Fitzmall price by about $800 bucks. (The details of my price paid are listed on this thread a couple of pages back). My sales guy told me they still had plenty of '07's and needed to clear them out for the '08's arrival. I would think they would be bending over backwards since they are coming up to the end of the month. Did you get a Fitzmall quote and ask Fairfax if they could beat it to make it worth your while? Nothing like a good dose of competition to help out the consumer :) If you have any other questions, let me know. This site was truly invaluable when I was deciding on buying my SF and I'm happy to pay it forward.

"my dealership uses these same kind of services. our touch-up people, dent repair guy, headlight repair, and other things like that are done by contractors on our premises (we don't have an on-site body shop). Now if its something bigger than they can do here, they will take the car to their shop." And when they don't match the paint, or the door ding isn't quite removed, or the remote body shop does a crappy job, everybody shrugs their shoulders and says that they did the best that they could. And you don't have a salesman, sales manager, of GM who give a crap because they did not get enough money on the sale. And, money drives it all. So, you may save on the front end, but, as happened with our purchase, the dealership will leave you hanging. You saved on the purchase, but they've got what little money they'll get from you and they'll move on to new customers. Been there, done that. We may have paid a little more at our full service dealer, but they bend over backwards to make sure that we are happy. For the few dollars more per month, I'll pay the extra to gain some dealership support. They want my business in the future. I don't choose the professionals who provide the things I rely on by the cheapest available. That includes my doctor, my dentist, and the folks who service my car. I don't want to be ripped off, but I do want quality professional work at a reasonable price. Perhaps I'm painting with a very broad brush, but my experience with our previous 'discount' dealer was so awful, that I will shop for more than just price in the future. And, no, I'm not affiliated with a dealership - I'm just a customer who learned an expensive and unpleasant lesson.

When I bought my 2006 Sonata LX in Jan. I made the contact with the dealer via Edmunds. I knew exactly what the dealer's cost was including the hold back. I am a pretty good negotiator and indicated that I was going to finance part of the cost. First "difference" was the interest rate but we settled to my satisfaction. The papers were prepared and when I checked the final numbers there was the $500. Internet advertising fee added on. I put my pen in my pocket and made it clear that there was no deal if that fee remained. The sales manager came over and removed it quickly. Now you have to understand that I buy a car at the end of the month when they are pushing to do their "quota". The deal was perfect, so much so, that I bought a 2006 Azera Limited from the same dealer in August. I have become friendly with the sales manager and general manager and actually stop into the showroom every so often to chat. So you see, do your homework, and the buying experience can be a pleasant one. With both cars I negotiated a price and then indicated that I had a lease with 1 month left (2003 Acura TL's) on 2 cars and they took off the lease payment from the bottom line. If I were to get a "wiseguy" salesperson and or the dealership was trying to be "cute" I would get up and walk. Believe it or not they want to sell cars and if you have your checkbook at the ready, they will bend. Important to remember that they are in business to make a profit and are entitled to it, but within reason. Then everyone is happy. :) Don
Re: V6 April Rebates [tb88]
by 94hawkskin on Tue Apr 04 14:26:15 PDT 2006
Looks like people who bought between November and March got great deals compared to these new rebates. I think they will come back, but when? I bought mine in December and am glad I did. It also looks like the V6 is becoming a better deal all the time. It now has a standard $2K rebate compared to the $500 rebate for a I4. Also more dealers seem to bend on their price more for the V6. They also took the valued owner rebate down from $1K to $500 for all trims. The maximum rebates you could get in March are excluding college and military rebates: V6 Models: $3K ($1K for standard rebate, $1K for HMFC, and $1K for Previous Ownership) I4: $2500 ($500 for standard rebate, $1K for HMFC, and $1K for Previous Ownership) Now the Maximum you can get is the following excluding military and college rebates: V6: $2500 ($2K for standard rebate and $500 for previous ownership) I4: Here is where it really makes a difference. $1000 ($500 for standard rebate and $500 for previous ownership).
