Horrible experience - beware of bait and switch!

by DouglasS on 10/31/2017

We are shopping for a used vehicle for our son, and were interested in a Mazda 3 Sport Hatchback on the lot. We were working with Marcus, who was excellent - respectful, no pressure, listened and understood. Unfortunately, Marcus went on vacation and handed us to Daryl, who was an absolute disaster. Immediately pressured me to purchase the car, without wanting me to take it to our mechanic to test it out. He acquiesced, then he went to the wrong mechanic shop - despite having the name in writing in a text (claimed he never got the text, yet he responded to the same text). Finally showed up at the mechanic 30 minutes late, never apologized. After mechanic's test, he specifically quoted a price to us, in front of the mechanic. Wanted to close at that price, but he changed the price to a higher one. Basically, he lied and tried to bait and switch us. I will never set foot on a Putnam lot again - there are plenty of other dealerships and cars to purchase - and I caution anyone that goes to this shop to be careful of bait and switch tactics.

First Car Purchase!

by Beverly on 10/29/2016

I bought my Mazda cx-5 about 3 weeks ago and had a great experience with Duchih Yu! Very friendly and funny customer service. I never felt pressured to buy and Duchich was very patient and willing to work with the offers we wanted. Thank you Putnam Mazda!

Easy car purchase experience

by lanpingd on 02/23/2011

Sent out emails for quotes on Friday, return-and-reply on Saturday, and bought my Mazda 3 on Sunday. Good price, good loan rate, fair trade-in, car purchase cannot be easier. Recommend Ali, he doesn't speak much but is efficient and honor the email price.

Best Mazda Dealer I could find in the Bay Area -Bar None

by diehard080 on 08/10/2010

I loved this dealer as they fooled me at first glance . I pulled up and saw 4 cars on the floor and 3 outside. I laughed because I was at another close by called Menlo that had a total of maybe 50 new mazdas -all trims all types --ekk--- Well I was promptly shown that they had two other storage locations in walking distance and over 250 new cars ready to go - they had 15 mazdaspeeds !~!! WOW- There was one sales guy that was pushy and seemed middle eastern and I [violative content deleted] and found another guy that I could understand Kappan or sopmething- He knew his stuff and had my head spinnig at first he was so exicted to talk about these cars --at first I thought it was an act but then I was shown his Mazda and after some time he was actually a sincere guy and I was blown away by that from that poiunt on things went well and the purchase was fair and easy --I was just lucky to find a good salesman,

Bought CX-9, liked the experience

by andmunds on 01/10/2010

I had a nearly perfect car buying experience. I did my research and found the car that I wanted, and knew the price that I wanted it buy for. I used edmunds to send email to various dealers in the area. Putnam was the first to call back. I asked for the email confirmation and got it promptly. They didn't have the exact colors I wanted (and they told me on the phone, so no surprise there). Other than the color they had 5 cars in the lot in the exact configuration I wanted, while some dealers in the area didn't even have GT trim at all on that weekend. So I decided to go with one of the colors they had. There was no sales pressure in my dealing with Putnam Mazda at all and I _loved_ it. I hate it when dealers waste my (and their) time on trying to push something so hard, that it causes me to stay away from their dealership. I negotiated the price for my trade-in a bit up from the initial offer. Not as much up as I wanted, but it was a fair trade. Again, no tricks, all straightforward - they made their offer for my trade in, and as I negotiated it, they did not try to back out of their offer for the new car. So in theory I could buy a new car from them and shop around my old car, but who wants that? The price for the trade-in was about $2K below Kelly Blue Book trade-in fair value, and I knew that, but I wasn't sure if I could get more at another dealership and then, again, I liked the price on the new car side and the way they dealt. So I thought it was a fair deal overall, between the trade-in and the new car, so I went ahead. I drove back home in a new car. They needed the signature from my wife for the trade-in, so their representative drove with me in a separate car. He was very polite and supportive throughout the whole process, no sales comedy shows or "magic closing techniques". When you're spending that much, you want the sales person to be playing in your team. Kudos to Putnam and to Ali (the sales person). I read the other review here that mentioned Ali and I was hesitant to deal with Putnam, because of that review. So when I was treated nicely, I felt obliged to leave my own review. When you buy a car from them or any other dealer, share your experience. I know it varies over time, people and car, so the more "collective intelligence" we have, the better. I'm not affiliated with Putnam or Ali in any way except that I just bought a car from them. I seriously consider buying another Mazda from them soon, we'll see. If my great experience will be spoiled in the future in any way, I'll surely share that, but so far I'm happy.

Putnam Mazda - Deception, Fraud and Lies

by sfnat on 10/24/2008

Shady, shady, shady sales staff. We purchased a 2008 CX-7 AWD from Morry and Ali at Putnam. We negotiated over the phone and then drove 30 minutes to the dealership to finalize the purchase. Not only did they try to renegotiate the price we discussed to over the phone, they didn't even have the car in stock. Morry had guaranteed that they had acquired the silver GT model from the "warehouse". It turns out they didn't have the car in stock and couldn't get it from a neighboring dealer. So, they came to us with a whopper of a LIE. Al and Morry told us the 2008 GT had $1800 of body damage. We were blown away, this was the last GT in the Bay Area and we thought it was damaged. Based on this LIE, we ended up buying a lesser model, the Touring. They didn't even have one 2008 CX-7 at their dealership, so they had to get one from another dealer. We weren't able to see the car until the next day and on inspection, IT HAD BODY DAMAGE. The front bumper had sustained impact, there were scratches and it had cracked near the grill. It also had 90 more miles than listed on the sales paperwork. We agreed to pick up the car after they had replaced the bumper. They then told lies and stated we had to sign the due bill (receive the car) in order for them to replace the bumper. Then they tried to give us an invoice to "repair OR replace font bumper" when we were clear that we would only accept it if the bumper was totally replaced. Shady. We wrote a letter to the president, Kent Putnam, and spoke with the Mazda General Sales Manager, Sam. When confronted with the lies, the sales manager tried to justify the reasoning for the lies?! They offered approx. $300 in service as compensation. Absolute garbage. Horrible place. Horrible customer service.
