This is a big increase over the regular all-wheel-drive version of the Corolla Cross, which gets 30 mpg combined. How does the Corolla Cross Hybrid drive? The Corolla Cross Hybrid's driving experience can be defined in one word: easy. This is the type of crossover that delivers exactly what it promises. It needed 7.9 seconds to get from 0 to 60 mph, which makes it substantially quicker than the standard gas-only Corolla Cross (which took a lazy 9.6 seconds to do the same deed). Power delivery is immediate and smooth, and it feels like the electric motor gives the Hybrid version a nice kick as you pull away from a stop. In daily driving, the Corolla Cross Hybrid is perfectly simple in operation and largely stays out of your way.

How comfortable is the Corolla Cross Hybrid? The Corolla Cross Hybrid provides suitable comfort for the daily grind. It absorbs most road bumps without trouble, though on occasion it can feel a bit too soft and floaty if the road has consistent undulations. The front seats have decent cushioning but come up a bit short on thigh support for taller drivers. The rear seatbacks are set at a comfortable degree of recline.

There's a noticeable level road noise that enters the cabin at highway speeds. Also, you'll notice noise and vibration from the engine, which is mild when cruising but highly intrusive when accelerating or climbing a hill. But on the upside, the air conditioning works great on hot days, and the Corolla Cross Hybrid has rear air vents, which is not a given in this class.

How’s the interior? The Corolla Cross Hybrid feels spacious in most passenger areas with the surprising exception of rear legroom; it's among the tightest in the class. The cabin is otherwise pretty easy to get in and out of, and the interior layout is practical and simple. The 8-inch infotainment touchscreen is easy to use.

How’s the tech? The Corolla Cross Hybrid comes with a solid number of driver assist features. These include adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assistance. Most of the systems performed as expected during our testing, and we didn't experience any false alarms. The adaptive cruise's following distance, though, is tuned a bit too conservatively to operate effectively in rush-hour traffic. Be ready for other drivers to pull in front of you.

The optional JBL audio system produces decent clarity and punchy bass. There's no onboard navigation system, which is becoming more common these days since many people prefer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration.

Storage

How’s the storage? There is enough storage space inside the Corolla Cross Hybrid to stash most small items away. The main cupholders and doorbin water bottle holders are of decent size, and the center console is deep enough to fit other items like your glasses, phone or wallet. The hybrid does have slightly less storage than the regular Corolla Cross (21.5 cubic feet compared to 25.2 cubic feet), but it's still generous enough for grocery runs or fitting a few suitcases.

Got small children? Installing a large child safety seat won't be quite as easy as it is in other SUVs due to the Corolla Cross' narrower lower door opening and rear legroom handicap. All anchor points and top tethers are clearly marked and easy to access.

Fuel Economy

How’s the fuel economy? The EPA says the Corolla Cross Hybrid should get 42 mpg in combined driving. Our test vehicle actually outperformed the EPA estimate on our real-world evaluation route, logging a combined 45.6 mpg. Some hybrids we test come up short in our testing, so it's nice to see the Corolla Cross Hybrid doing well here. It's a genuine fuel-sipper.

Is the Corolla Cross Hybrid a good value? Build quality on our test model was more than passable. The panel gaps were tight and little to nothing rattled. But we'd like slightly nicer materials for the touch points like the steering wheel, shift knob and radio controls, especially at this car's asking price. That said, we're mostly satisfied with the car's quality.

Toyota's basic and powertrain warranties are par for the course. You get three-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper and five-year/60,000-mile powertrain coverage. However, the complimentary maintenance plan for two years/25,000 miles with roadside assistance is a nice perk.

The Corolla Cross Hybrid isn't meant to stand out — it's meant to be a nice place to temper your lead-footed habits and to make sure you don't spend too much on gas. Its long list of amenities, and Toyota's reputation for reliability, will hopefully give buyers peace of mind. It's the kind of car that does exactly what it says on the packaging, and that's all it needs to.

It is fun to drive and had lots of options. Comfy for a longer trip, if you can get all your stuff in. I get about 38 mpg on the freeway where 75 mph is the speed limit. I get 42 ish in town. So that is less than I expected. It is not intuitive to use the radio, or climate controls. But easy to play my downloaded audiobooks and use my Spotify account . The Niro is an excellent example of efficiency, both in terms of fuel consumption and interior space. The Niro is rated to achieve up to 53 mpg combined, to the Toyota's 42 mpg combined, and even though the Kia is shorter overall than the Toyota, the Kia has more legroom and a larger cargo capacity. But the Toyota has a more powerful engine and comes standard with all-wheel drive, which is not available on the Kia.

What is the Corolla Cross Hybrid?

Toyota introduced the Corolla Cross SUV just last year to fill the gap between the larger RAV4 and the C-HR subcompact. As the name implies, the Corolla Cross is mechanically related to the Corolla sedan and hatchback but has a lifted stance, more cargo space and available all-wheel drive. Now there's an additional model within the lineup: the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid. As its name indicates, it's a hybrid, and with it comes the expectation of higher fuel efficiency. But the hybrid powertrain provides other benefits as well and that makes the Corolla Cross Hybrid a potential better buy than its gas-only brethren.

What's under the Corolla Cross Hybrid's hood?

The Corolla Cross Hybrid's four-cylinder engine and hybrid system combine to produce a total of 196 horsepower. This is the same hybrid powertrain that Toyota is putting into its redesigned 2023 Prius. The all-wheel-drive version, which is standard on the Corolla Cross Hybrid, has an additional electric motor that drives the rear wheels when necessary to provide extra traction in slippery conditions or even help the Corolla Cross Hybrid feel a little sportier when going around corners.

As with the Prius, getting 196 hp from a hybrid is pretty impressive. It's more than the regular Corolla Cross, which has just 169 hp. Toyota estimates that the Corolla Cross Hybrid will accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in a respectable 8 seconds.

And what about fuel economy?

Toyota estimates the 2023 Corolla Cross Hybrid will get up to 42 mpg in combined city/highway driving. This is a big increase over the regular all-wheel-drive version of the Corolla Cross, which gets 30 mpg combined. The Prius is still more efficient, as is the rival Kia Niro, but we think 42 mpg is pretty solid considering the vehicle's AWD and utility-oriented nature.

How does the Corolla Cross Hybrid drive?

Around the city, the powertrain is responsive and gets up to highway speeds easily, though if you're generous with the accelerator pedal the four-cylinder engine gets loud and buzzy pretty quickly. The steering and the ride are tuned for comfort to be sure, but thankfully the Corolla Cross Hybrid feels reasonably secure and in control when cornering. There's also enough ground clearance to get over ruts and rocks when driving off-road

How's the Corolla Cross Hybrid's interior?

The Corolla Cross Hybrid offers a reasonable amount of cargo space. The cabin is very similar to that of the non-hybrid, which is generally a good thing. It's easy to get in and out, and the controls are straightforward.

In the back seat, taller passengers will notice the lack of legroom relative to other small SUVs, though headroom is still pretty good. And backseat passengers get air vents standard, something you won't find on its namesake Corolla sedan/hatchback.

How's the Corolla Cross Hybrid's tech?

For 2023, all Corolla Cross models, including the Hybrid, receive a new center touchscreen interface. It has a lot more features than the prior system, such as available navigation powered by Google, more robust voice command capabilities for many of the car's features and controls ("Hey, Toyota" is the prompt), and the ability to receive over-the-air updates for new features and upgrades. It also supports wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration.

The Corolla Cross Hybrid also comes equipped with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, the latest driver assistance software suite from the automaker. This is a step forward from what Toyota had on the regular 2022 Corolla Cross. Feature sets are similar, but Toyota says the 3.0 system is better at detecting hazards. In our limited driving opportunity with the Corolla Cross Hybrid, we found the various features, such as adaptive cruise control and lane keeping, worked well and were unobtrusive.
