The 2017 Volvo S60's aggressive wedge styling sharply droops the nose down to give an attractive stance. It looks so modern, so up-to-date, that's it's hard to believe this second-generation S60 has been on sale since the 2011 model year. Entering its sixth year, this still is a handsome, exciting-looking entry-level luxury sedan.
Volvo sells the S60 in several different trims The S60 T5 Dynamic is well equipped and powered by a turbocharged version of Volvo's latest Drive-E family of four-cylinder engines. (The Drive-E four-cylinder engine will power all Volvos in the foreseeable future and has already established itself as capable in the larger S90 sedan and XC90 crossover.) The S60 features a 2.0-liter turbocharged version that produces 240 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. It feeds the front wheels through a new eight-speed automatic transmission. And yes, all-wheel drive is an option.
The S60 T5 Inscription model adds more equipment and a wheelbase that's stretched 3.1 inches for some extra legroom in the back. It uses the same engine and transmission as the Dynamic and Volvo also offers it with all-wheel drive.
The T6 AWD R-Design is only available with all-wheel drive and comes bursting with neat details in the interior, plus a 302-hp turbocharged and supercharged version of the Drive-E 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. The stretched wheelbase is not an option here, however.
And at the top of the trim levels is the mighty Polestar, with its new-for-2017 Drive-E 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, turbocharged and supercharged to the tune of 345 hp. It's only available with all-wheel drive, a suspension tuned for track heroics and massive wheels and tires. It's the least Volvo-like Volvo that Volvo sells: a supercar cleverly disguised as a mild-mannered Swedish sedan.
Fuel economy on the S60 is good. The front-drive S60 Dynamic is EPA rated at 29 mpg combined (25 city/ 36 highway). The hyperactive Polestar is rated at 23 mpg combined (20 city/27 highway). Anyone who cares about fuel economy likely isn't shopping for a Polestar.
When it comes to safety, there's plenty (this is Volvo, after all). The features that are standard include antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front-seat side airbags, side curtain airbags and whiplash-reducing front head restraints. Low-speed frontal collision warning and collision mitigation with automatic braking (City Safety) systems are standard and can help the driver avoid a collision with other vehicles or a run-in with a stationary object at speeds of up to 19 mph by automatically applying the brakes if reaction from the driver isn't quick enough.
With literally dozens of cars from which to choose, the entry-level luxury sedan category is difficult to navigate without a guide. Edmunds is here to help you find the 2017 Volvo S60 that's right for you.
