Overview
If you're in the market for a small SUV with luxury features (but without the luxury price tag), consider the 2027 Volkswagen Tiguan. It's well equipped in its base model, and upper trims have an upscale design and cool features, including massaging seats and an automated parking system. Volkswagen completely redesigned the Tiguan — the company's best-selling model — in 2025 and introduced a handful of additions for 2026. Changes are light for 2027, but every model now has a higher-resolution camera and an auto-hold brake feature, which allows you to take your foot off the brake when stopped.
Edmunds Expert Rating
We drove the Volkswagen Tiguan on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
Driving experience
Considering the Tiguan's comfortable ride quality around town, we were surprised to learn that it's also fun to drive. While it's no sports car, the Tiguan is more entertaining to drive briskly around corners than most other SUVs in its class. That translates to confidence and a fun-to-drive feeling out on the road.
The Tiguan comes with a comprehensive set of advanced driver aids as standard equipment. Most of them, including the adaptive cruise control, worked well in our testing to make driving easier. The exception was the lane keeping assistance, which let the vehicle wander a bit too much in its lane.
Comfort
There's lots of space in the rear, so even tall passengers can sit behind a tall driver. The outboard positions are heated in the SEL R-Line, and the rear seats also have their own climate controls. The biggest downside is the prominent center hump, which makes the center rear position notably less comfy.
The front and rear doors open wide for easy access, and if you plan on using the Tiguan as a family hauler, the rear seats have easy-to-find lower anchors. Combine that with the cavernous space, and there should be no problem fitting rear-facing child seats.
In-cabin tech
Integrating our smartphones to the Tiguan through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto was straightforward, and VW uses a clever vertical wireless charging pad in the center console.

Value
The biggest downside is the warranty, which comes up short against class leaders like Hyundai and Kia.

2027 Volkswagen Tiguan trim level differences
[Editor's note: The following unofficial information is based on last year's Tiguan. We expect the 2027 model will have a similar lineup and we'll update this section once we have complete information.] The 2027 Volkswagen Tiguan is a five-seat two-row crossover SUV that's offered in four trim levels: S, SE, SE R-Line Black and SEL R-Line Turbo. The S, SE and SE R-Line Black models all use a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 201 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque. The SEL R-Line Turbo gets a more powerful variant of this same engine that makes 268 horsepower and 258 lb-ft, making this one of the quickest compact crossovers around. All Tiguans use an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard on most trims. All-wheel drive is optional on the lower three models and standard on the SEL R-Line Turbo.
Trim we recommend
Volkswagen hasn't released complete information about the 2027 Tiguan as of this writing. We'll update our recommendation if anything changes, but based on last year's Tiguan, we recommend going with the midlevel SE trim. For a few thousand dollars more than the base S trim, the SE includes upgraded upholstery, larger (and better-looking) 19-inch wheels, a power liftgate and more. It's well worth the upgrade in the long term.
Competitors to consider
The Tiguan competes in one of the most crowded and popular segments, with just about every automaker offering one or two SUVs that are roughly the same size and price as the Tiguan. Some of Edmunds' favorites include the Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V. While we like the Tiguan's space and overall driving demeanor, the lack of a hybrid powertrain makes it feel a bit behind the times.
