Great Value - Test Drive One

2019 Volkswagen Tiguan SE 4MOTION 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A)

This vehicle was a big surprise. I drove many competitors: Mazda CX-5, Toyota Rav4, Chevy Equinox, Ford Escape, Jeep Cherokee, Honda CRX - None were even close to the value and drivability of the Tiguan. I paid $24,300 for a 4-motion SE (MSRP $29,215) with the cool spoked wheels / dark gray back ground. The color is Platinum with black interior and it looks like an Audi. Every feature of this car is great and easy to use in the SE package. The car is a delight to drive around town and it is a cruiser on the interstate. I got the 5 seater and the interior is so roomy. The back seats have all kinds of head and leg room with the seats slid all the way back. Stereo and tech. is awesome. Acceleration from a dead stop is so-so, but I found using the torque from this engine and keeping RPM's low; works better than getting crazy with the gas pedal. I drive in the Eco mode. MPG's are about 2 mpg better than the sticker says. Update after 1 year of ownership --- Vehicle is still performing as initially described. It's been almost two years since purchasing this vehicle and I have had no issues. It still smells and drives like the day I purchased it. Update after 2 years of ownership--Vehicle had a reflash of the computer from a recall... The vehicle now operates best in "Normal" mode versus eco or sport for how I drive. The lag going in and out of 1st gear is much improved. MPG's stayed good after the reflash. Everything else on this vehicle is still operating like the day it came off the lot. This is an excellent vehicle and probably will be my last petro vehicle the way things are trending towards EV. Good job VW!

Purchased In December 2018 - Great SUV

Duane, 01/22/2019

We purchased this SUV in December 2018 and are thrilled with the SUV. It is quiet, comfortable, and the tech available is fantastic (and it works!). While performance off the line is sluggish, once you are moving, such as highway speeds, I don't have issues with acceleration. I will admit that it is sluggish off the line, but that is it. The features, comfort, price, etc, all out weigh this one con. The 3rd row seat has allowed us to take 1 car vs 2 when running around town and/or taking and dropping off kids as well.

Got the Tiguan SE with 3rd row and sunroof. Happy! Here is why. Talking about the design, I am tired of the fake sophistication of today's cars. I feel we are driving spaceships with brain freezing nonfunctional design from 60'-'70 sci-fi cult movies. The successful CR-V with convoluted front design looks just like Jabba the Hutt. The CR-V's rear design is just the new version Starship Enterprise from Star Trek. I don't get the bathtub design philosophy of RAV4. Tucson is just a recycled old Santa Fe. I kinda like Kia's recent consistent and identifiable design but I don't like the logo :). Equinox... OMG, the dying-soon "fluidic design" going wrong. It looks like the back of the car is running after the front and it can't make it. Mazda CX-5, it's just a continuous struggle to get the "ready for a kiss" grille perfect. Forester is just an exception, it is an instant historic vehicle right out of the production line. Volkswagen conservatively managed to shave the fluff the other guys are playing with to impress us. I am not a fan of the Tiguan’s back design, the extreme simplicity. It looks like wearing very tight underwear under a close-fitting dress. Sometimes it appears cool to me, sometimes looks cheap, it depends how I weak up. Perfect size for my wife so she doesn’t have to stand up when parking. We didn’t want an over-sized SUV to move air around the town. I checked on Atlas but it looks too mad to me. For those complaining about acceleration hesitation/transmission lag (I personally didn’t feel it yet, but...) put $25K more and get a luxury SUV for showoff. Don't buy an affordable car and expect a Mercedes AMG performance. The 3rd row is a plus for kids but not for my mother in law, although that was my silent good intention. SE model does not have the remote start and the Car-Net. The specs are very confusing even for a smart guy like me - my wife confirmed it. I found out about the missing treasure after I signed up the contract. A big minus for my dealership who sensed and used my weaknesses. Anyway, it has heated front seats (not for the bad kids in the back) to worm up my broken feelings about VW's wrong decision. You get the remote start and more features in the SEL models, but I would run to BMW dealership if I had the money. The front collision, blind spot sensor, and rear traffic alert features are faster and more civilized than my wife's scary safety warnings, so we don’t have to talk about divorce again. The seats are OK. Easy to clean after my civilized kids eat in the car. The back seats look better than a bench in a train station but they are comfortable - based on my kids' testimony. The infotainment screen is impressive, you get a little less than 50% of Tesla's floor to ceiling screen. You can mirror your Android Auto but only when you don't forget to bring a USB cable in the car. For deep bass music lovers, you get an OMG sound quality with the standard no-name speakers in the SE model. We painfully increased our budget and got the sunroof. It is huge. Sometimes I let my wife drive and I ride on the back seat enjoying the panoramic view (I recommend it, but explain the intention very well, you might look suspicious). No powered rear lift-gate but I exercised a special body move that makes my neighbors believe I have a fully automated trunk door. We still discover amazing "no-need" features. Yesterday I discovered by mistake the rear camera washer. Yes, it has that. Do you remember those moments: “I will clean the back camera next stop”? Those painful seconds of regret and emptiness are gone! 😊 Mileage? If I compare it with my boss’s Aston Martin DB9 the Tiguan is extremely fuel-efficient. Yeap, others are doing better on this. Overall it is a great car. Seriously now, for immature husbands, this car has plenty of good features to toy around for a while. Find the right time because it will make your wife regret all the better choices she had before the marriage. More to say but you got the point. It is exactly what the name implies: half Tiger and half Iguana. Cheers!

A most understated, underrated SUV

"Compact" it is not when it comes to my 6'3" frame getting into this car with ease. Coming from a Jeep Grand Cherokee Ltd powered by a 5.7 HEMI (Plus fuel Recommended) into this model left me in amazement. The functionality and HiTech of the Tiguan is as loaded as it's cousin, the highly rated Audi Q5. Driving in Eco Mode is a hay day of fuel economy. The average MpG since the beginning is 24.9. This includes many hours learning the various features with the engine running going nowhere. Now I luxuriate in 27+ MpG between fill-ups, of course Regular fuel. My Jeep hit me with $45-55 per tank load and gave me 235-325 miles in mixed driving. If I need acceleration I use the Sport mode and it shifts and accelerates just fine. Once I reach my target speed considering other traffic I go back to Eco and at 75 MpH show 31+ GpH doing similar travels as I have for several years now. Trying out all the features available takes awhile (hopefully never to find out the Emergency Crash Event), however the system performed amazingly well in crash avoidance when I was cut off harshly by an irresponsible driver last week. The LED lighting is great and much better than rated by the "experts". 4Motion is a treat!

Tiguan hits it’s stride in year 2

Rod Reichardt, 02/22/2019
2019 Volkswagen Tiguan SEL R-Line 4dr SUV (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A)

I had a 2018 Tiguan loaner car briefly. I really liked it but for a couple of issues. First it was slow off the line. Driving it in sport mode solved that but it really shouldn’t have been necessary IMO. Also it had an intermittent creak from the passenger side dash area. I still liked it. Fast forward to 2019. My wife wanted an SUV so I steered her toward the Tiguan. Bought an SEL R-Line and couldn’t be happier with the choice. Haven’t had it very long so I cannot comment on things like reliability but it feels very solid. Throttle response is dramatically better than the 2018 I drove. That one felt underpowered. This one does not. I have tried sport mode once and don’t feel like it’s necessary at all. No creaks or rattles. The ride is probably a bit softer and floater than I prefer but it’s really comfortable. Typical VW interior quality. It’s not flashy, but it exudes quality. Fake leather is decent. Radar cruise control is a very nice implementation. I would have liked lane assist as well but it’s only available in the SEL Premium. Same for the Fender audio. We wanted the 3rd row seats and couldn’t find an SEL Premium that had them. Same with AWD. Once you get AWD the 3rd row becomes an option and our local dealers don’t order them. Probably won’t use them often but seems silly not to have them at all. FWD is probably fine here in central Texas. We might get some ice once a year. No hint of torque steer. Front seats are firm but comfortable. Second row is roomy. 3rd row is fine for kids or small adults for short distances. Infotainment is great with Android Auto and CarPlay. I don’t usually use factory nav but with the digital dash the nav screen can be displayed directly in front of the driver between the gauges. The whole thing is customizable and looks great in any light. Sound quality from the base speaker setup is ok. Not great but acceptable for a family SUV. There 2 USB ports in the front and 2 in the 2nd row along with a 12 volt port in each. My wife uses Bluetooth and that works well. I use CarPlay and have had no issues. The vehicle drives nicely. Not exactly sporty but it’s still somewhat fun to drive. Acceleration is decent. The 8 speed auto doesn’t hunt for gears. Shifts are smooth. Ride is a bit soft and floaty but still firm enough so that it handles well. Brakes are great. I haven’t had a chance to test the autonomous emergency braking but I like knowing it’s there. This vehicle eats miles. It is quiet and comfortable and easy to drive. Fuel economy is better than advertised by the EPA so far. We’re getting 26.9 in mixed driving so far. I generally turn off the stop/start as it’s a bit annoying to me. The panoramic sunroof is nice. We’re in Texas so I don’t see us using it much once it warms up. Tiguan has nice functionality for its size. In reality I consider the Tiguan a mid-sized SUV rather than compact. It has lots of room and extra seats if you need them. We had a 2012 Dodge Durango. Our Tiguan feels like it has similar functionality with a smaller footprint and much better technology. It doesn’t tow much but I doubt many people buy these with towing in mind. The Durango was nearly $8,000 more. My wife loved that Durango. I think she will love this Tiguan just as much. We’ve had a number of VWs in recent years and have had no reliability issues. Regardless the 6 year, 72,000 mile warranty provides lots of peace of mind.

After two months of test driving CRV's, CX5's, Foresters repeatedly, I thought to try out the under-rated VW Tiguan and so glad I did. The other models mentioned were not bad cars, I was just not thrilled by lack-luster CV transmissions and the new CX-5 didn't feel like an upgrade from my 2016 model. So, here's the skinny on the VW: I don't understand the negative press this car has received. It's comfy, quiet, accelerates very well here in Colorado (turbos make more power altitude) and has different power settings to make the most of it's thrifty 2L turbo power-train. Eco speaks for itself for max efficiency and slow to respond throttle input. Normal feels normal and Sport mode kicks things up a notch with more immediate shifts and acceleration. In "normal" mode, I'm averaging near 30mpg and have seen 33+mpg on one 70 mile hwy trip. Cruise range should be excellent and come close to 500 miles but I cannot confirm that yet, it's a conservative estimate based on the car's computer. Also, all of the controls have a greater sense and feel of quality that's just a bit better than the competition. My SE comes with Android Auto and AWD and 3rd row seating but that's optional. One final note: Excellent stereo with XM, HD-FM tuner, CD player! Great graphics, touch controls and response. Pricing and 72K warranty sealed the deal for me.

I was looking for a family car in the small SUV category. I was first swayed to this vehicle because of the optional third row seating. Once I started to look further into the features of the car, I was pleasantly surprised by the overall value. When you move up a level to the SE model you get upgraded tech and leatherette seating. My car is equipped with 3rd row seating & a panoramic sunroof. The only draw back is a slightly underwhelming engine/ transmission. The turbo takes a second to spool up off the line. I find it to have adequate power on the highway. Very low cabin noise and a smooth ride. If you combined the safety, tech and creature comforts you have an awesome car with a purchase price while below competitors with comparable features. Update 2/21/21 it’s been almost 2 years of ownership & 19k miles. We are very pleased with the suv overall. Smooth ride and nicely appointed. The only draw back is a slightly underwhelmed engine as the torque is not great off the line.

2019 Tiguan SEL

I have three young children and this car is awesome. The third row seat works great for younger kids. I've had better than advertised or reviewed gas mileage in the city and on the highway. The performance is fine for what the vehicle is and family SUV. If you want to go fast and have super performance, why would you even consider this?

Not Bad for a Volkswagen

Chitown Sam, 04/22/2019
2019 Volkswagen Tiguan SEL Premium 4MOTION 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8A)

Let me start this review with the caveat that our driving experience with our new 2019 Tiguan SEL Premium 4Motion is compared with a current 2017 A4, and a 2011 Traverse of which the Tiguan replaced. I've also had a 1987 GLI so pretty familiar with German cars. And after 2K miles of 60% highway driving, we have been very impressed by the Tiguan. EXTERIOR - 4 The paint and finish is very nice (and should be since it's new!). The exterior lighting package is inclusive including headlights moves side to side based on the direction the car is turning. The premium package also included exterior mirrors that auto-fold in when car is locked. Only slight disappointment is that the fog lights are these dim, yellow halogen bulbs while the rest of the lights are LED which makes it weird at night. The front end is square but nice looking (very European), and the back reminds me a bit of its cousin the Q5, and the "distant" cousin the X5. And while the car does have dual exhaust, rather than working the tail pipes around to go through the dual exhaust housing built into the rear bumper, the pipes end just short of it and the "dual exhaust" openings are FAKE! (This is actually not that unusual as I've seen a couple of other brands do the same thing! Crazy!) INTERIOR - 5 The inside of this trim of Tiguan is probably the most impressive. The leather bucket seats are comfortable and fit the driver snugly. It's very nice leather and well made.It also has a very large moon roof when a motorized screen that works well to block the sun completely on a hot and bright sunny day. The instrument panel is a blast with a large touch screen that allows you to do just about anything you want short of ordering from Grub Hub...but can connect easily with your phone to do that. This trim also includes a digital cockpit that include both a tach and speed gauge as well as the usual water temp, battery, and fuel readings. What's cool about the cockpit is that you can "throw" the nav map from the touch screen onto the cockpit so the map is front and center in the cockpit screen. Only draw back for me inside is placement of the gear selector, cupholders, and center arm rest where the arm rest is placed further back than most people would like meaning drivers will rest on a small part of their elbow during a long trip. DRIVING - 3.5 The driving experience definitely was slightly lacking as most reviewers would agree. Granted I'm used to zipping around in an A4 with what I believe is one of the best 2.0T engines VW/Audi have built and tuned. (I've had four A4s so I know...) That said, while it doesn't jump off the line like my A4, the Tiguan 2.0 TSI engine does a decent job and as long as you're not trying to race someone, it is more than adequate in most driving situations. There is enough power to help you get around town and highway driving is quite nice. I do need to get used to the lane-assist feature that tries to nudge you back if it senses you drifting. No audible warning or vibrating steering wheels like some other brand, which drivers have reported to be annoying. The one thing we do have to get used to is the engine noise. During harder acceleration, it does tend to be lot noisier than the big V6 we had on the Traverse, but with the radio turned up a bit, it's not that noticeable. Nonetheless, it's the one thing aside from power that I don't like about the Tiguan. I'm actually thinking about exploring some additional sound-proofing of the engine compartment firewall. OVERALL - 4 The 2019 Tiguan is really a very nice option. Before we bought this, we seriously considered the Terrain Denali, and the Nissan Pathfinder. But with the more aggressive discounting at VW, and their now improved bumper-to-bumper warranty, it became an obvious choice for us. Oh, and the 3rd row seating that we got was a nice bonus even if used for emergency short-haul only. My recommendation...go buy one!

2019 VW Tiguan SE 4motion first of all I like VW vehicles they are in the fun side, driving is comfortable u put it in the sport mode and it does the best for what it is. Computer of the vehicle is very smart to know the driver habits and adopt right away. 4motion is very very good. Can the vehicle be a little better yes but I think that VW wanted fuel economy the fun and space. Engine it is in the slow side for 1st timer as soon u get used too never feels under power & yes 220 hp &260 torque would be lovely. 1 thing when u fill it up 5 passenger and wit stuff engine never feels like a cvt that struggles. Improvements are always welcome still for what it is design is good

My SECOND Tiguan

I owned a 2012 Tiguan before I purchased my 2019 Tiguan. The comfort of the older model had me a little intimidated when they change it over, I actually hesitated to get the new one because my older one was so comfortable! But I started running into expensive repairs on my '12 model at 150k miles, so I figured it was now or never! I was worried it wouldn't be as good. I WAS WRONG! It's just as comfortable, if not more! I didn't want the sunroof, which apparently is hard to find. I also didn't get the 3rd row seats as they are only big enough for kids and I don't have any little ones. The 6 year (72,000) mile warranty is the BEST. I also was able (AND RECOMMEND) to get the service package. That covers all my service up to 50k miles! The minor complaint I have is the USB slots. There are two and if you have two phones connected the poor system gets very confused on which one to allow on the app... I just want them to charge but they render my phone useless if I am not using the app. Not supposed to be driving and using the phone anyway, so it's a light complaint. The back up camera is the best quality one I've seen in a car in the last 3 years. My husband's 2015 tiguan's camera is very low quality, but the 2019 one is very clear! In sport mode, the Tiguan excels on the pedal but in normal and Eco modes: it feels a bit sluggish. I'm averaging 33 MPG in my commutes for the first 500 miles I've driven the car. It's so quiet and a very comfortable ride. I love the push start, and I'm SO GLAD I can turn off the Stop-Start Mechanism. Wish it would remain off, since you have to deactivate it with every start of the car, but since I actually CAN turn it off, again, light complaint. The radio/touch screen is very user friendly. I have it set to turn off every 10 seconds, but the sensor notices your hand coming towards it so it's easy to flash on. The bluetooth is seamless and I'm really glad they added the app, so my phone's navigation (Google Maps) can be see on the touch screen. All in all, I love the vehicle so far and I hope for many more years to come!

I am genuinely Happy withmy vehicle however all of a sudden the drivers side front window lowering and raising is making noises also within the back door also on the drivers side there is a noise every time I hit even the smallest bump also makes noises when lowering and raising the rear window pretty much there are problems with raising and lowering all windows. I have purchased Volkswagens since 1973 have never had any problems with any of my vehicles. I believe in the period of time I have never whether the vehicle was brand new or used. Was really excited to purchase a Tiguan and when all of a sudden I am having problems I am truly disappointed. My vehicle is a 2019.

Best Small SUV

Unless you’re looking for ultra luxury or a supercar moniker on your small SUV, you need to check out the new Volkswagen Tiguan. The redesign has the best passenger room and cargo space in its class. Sleek exterior, high quality interior, and top notch technology. Even in the SE model (next up from base), this baby comes loaded with features you’ll have to pay several thousand more for in a Toyota or Honda. Getting better than advertised gas mileage: 25-30 city, 33-36+ highway...and this is AWD! Fun to drive. Grabs the road better and more responsive than the Japanese vehicles I’d driven for 2 decades (including Lexus and Infiniti). I keep it in Eco mode and shift back and forth to Sport to get more pickup when needed. German attention to detail is evident in every feature and makes this car look and feel luxurious. This is my first Volkswagen after driving Lexus, Infiniti, Toyota, and Honda for 20+ years. Makes me wonder why I haven’t considered VW before. This SUV looks great, is fun to drive, and is a hit with the kids for road trips and around-the-town driving. Downsized from a 2007 Infiniti QX56 to the 2019 Tiguan. I’m saving $500+ monthly in gas and insurance. I’m really enjoying this vehicle. Very happy with my purchase. If you haven’t considered VW before, take a look.

I have had my Tiguan for 2 months now. I love everything about this SUV from the interior , handling , speed.. etc. my 2nd week with the car , I made a right turn and water poured into my lap from the interior lights. I had to pull over. There was a nasty rain storm that day.p I called VW right away and brought it in. After 4 days, they couldn’t find anything and I picked up my car. 2 days later..... I made a right turn and water poured in again!!! This time, it made its way into the fabric!!! I brought my car in again! This time I was quite upset since the dealership is 30 miles away! They had my car for about a week and ended replacing the assembly of the panaramic sun roof. All seems fine for a few weeks , no water from the lights or on the fabric by the lights. Yesterday, I looked over to the passenger side window and noticed huge water stains by the handle and sun visor. They were not there when I picked up the car the 2nd time. First car for my daughter

After reviewing multiple cars we ended up buying my daughter the Tiguan 2.0T SEL for her first car. Everything was fine at first, but then we started noticing that her washer fluid kept having to be refilled more often than normal, the lights around her sunroof were not coming, and also the driver side door was rattling. We brought it in to the dealership and they found out that she had the wrong cap on the washer fluid valve and her sunroof was leaking. So after a month of being in the shop because the piece for the sunroof was on backorder, we thought that they had fixed everything but the rattling was still there and she was driving the other day in the rain and water started dripping from the interior lights. We are getting rid of the car after having continuous issues.

This vehicle after they recalled it for the sunroof lighting issue had more sunroof issues than a little bit! I go outside it was cold out I got into the vehicle and notice Ice on all the windows, I turned the vehicle on and sat for 1/2 hour to defrost the windows only to notice that the windows weren't frozen from the outside but the inside. I took the vehicle back to vw they had it for a month! I got it back it rained outside but you would have thought that I left the sunroof open because the inside of the vehicle was soaked, this was after VW had the vehicle for a month! I took it back and they supposedly fixed the issue. This was my first and last VW I will never ever buy or recommend a Tiguan to anyone. I purchased the vehicle in 2017 it is a 2018 I got the lemon.

Love the ride

Last summer I rented a VW Jetta for a 30 day road trip over 4,000 miles. I enjoyed the car so much I decided to add VW to my search list when looking to replace my 2016 Toyota Camry at lease end. Since we had pretty much decided on moving to a compact SUV - we shopped Toyota RAV4 - Ford Escape - Mazda CX-5 and the Tiguan. After reading a lot of reviews of the RAV4 - and getting very little manufacturer incentives we eliminated the RAV4 + the reviews were not all that exciting. The Escape had huge savings from Ford at the time, but we were having a hard time getting excited even though the Ford dealerships far exceeded our experience with Toyota or Mazda. Super high pressure tactics. On a whim we stopped in a VW dealership while away in a tripjust to have our first look. The walk around tire kicking raised our interest and so when we came home we went to a dealer for a test ride. The 3rd row seat got our high approval since we are doing grandparent duty with 4 of our grandkids- car seats etc. We like all the extras that came in the SE model - and then once I was behind the wheel I was sold. I had read the reviews on the acceleration issues but the test ride gave me the chance to eliminate that as a problem and frankly have been very happy with acceleration- handling and braking since bringing the car home. Finally a 6 year 72K mile warranty made the Tiguan our very best deal for a lease vehicle. What we can own the car at lease end and still have a 36K 3 year warranty on the vehicle if we love it as much at the end as we do so far.

Bought the first car and two days later the engine light came on. Took it in and I was able to get a new one. 4 days later engine light turned on again. Haven’t made my first payment and been to the dealership 3 times already. The first car had under 100 miles and the second car had 5 miles.

The lease on my 2016 Tiguan was about up and I was apprehensive about the new version. Reviews said it was slower and got poor mileage. My advice to potential buyers would be to forget the reviews and drive one. My 2019 gets 5-6 miles per gallon more than my 2016 Tiguan. The car is bigger and heavier so the power feels softer, but increasing from a six to eight speed auto compensates effectively for this. As a next generation model, it should be more refined, with better safety features and it is. The ride is more plush than the 2016, but it still has that VW responsiveness and precision. The extra room is really noticeable and appreciated. Looking at comparable vehicles, I didn't find anything that could match the Tiguan, taking into account price, features, and performance.

Great car and value for the money, test drove the Honda CR-V and the Jeep cheerokee. The fuel economy is far better than stated and the car is very roomy with comfortable ride. The third row seat is a nice plus in a pinch. This car has double the warranty of any make or model big plus. Price was comparable to both Jeep and Honda camparably equipped.

Volkswagen has a winner in the new Tiguan. Traded a 2015 forester limited for the 2019 Tiguan in Stone Blue and couldn't be any happier. The ride is extremely quiet and comfortable. The infotainment system is excellent. Safety features work great. MPG is much higher than EPA rating. Acceleration is similar to competitors and not an issue. Leith VW in Raleigh, NC provided the best buying experience ever. Salesman Mike was awesome. Great car, great price, great dealership experience = the perfect trifecta.

Raw Deal

I purchased a 2018 Volkswagen Tigual SEL Premium in 2017 and have since had so many problems with vital parts of the vehicle, I am afraid to drive it or even put my kids and grandkids in it. I have been at the dealership more than I had been with my old 2012 Nissan Quest SE. They have performed reparis from the break line, injector seals, T8 fuel injector harness, the intake maniford gasket, engine air box and the cylinder 4 injector. Then on top of that it was the previous issues with electrical. I was stopped by NYPD for not having proper functioning headlights. I had to have them replaced twice. Now there's a very strong smell of gasoline inside the cabin and around the vehicle, it feels like the car is going to go up in flames if anyone is near with a cigarret making me feel extremely unsafe to even turn on the vehicle. As a law enforecement officer and a parent and grandparent, I feel like I was given a raw deal by Volkswagen. I wanted to experience a Volkswagen's safety and features, however this has turned out to be a nightmare for all of us. There is though that car payment that doesn't go away. I still have to pay that car note regardless of the fact that the vehicle I am paying for does not work and is not safe to even transport our pets in it. To make matters worst, the dealership Teddy Volkswagen in the Bronx,NY doesn't even offer loaner vehcies. I would have to spend more money on rentals and hope to get reimbursed for it. I am so extremely dissapointd. I have received no apoligies from anyne at Volkswagen.

Hey there! I recently purchased my 2019 Tiguan on Memorial Day weekend. I’ve had a 2014 Jetta for a few years, which I LOVED, however it was started to break down every month or do & it was getting to be ridiculous! It was time to bite the bullet an invest in my “mom car”. The 2019 Tiguan was it.... after a lot of back & forth researching & negotiating with my salesman. Let’s fast forward. The weekend of June 22 what happens? My engine light comes on!!! My thoughts... you’ve got to be kidding me! Check out what’s under the good & come to find out... there is 0oz of oil in my brand new car lol I also hook my car up to see what code I get to help determine why my light is on. Same code is got was the same one I was getting with my Jetta! - mind you every time my car had issues everything got fixed... I’m a mom of 2 I needed a reliable car! I take my car in to get checked.... ECM problem! Which I knew because of previous experience. They kept my car for a few days & I got it back on a Friday. Cool. Problem fixed. It just needed to be “updated” ... the software... on a new car... hmmm ok. Let’s fast forward AGAIN! July 4th. I go to pack up the car to enjoy the day at the pool with the kids... what do I see ... THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON AGAIN! Now I’m fuming. I try not to let it ruin my day with the kids so I simply make another appointment for the following morning. I take my car in .... today at 9... was told it make take x amount of time which I was cool with. 11:30 rolls around & im told i may need a new turbo..... hmmm sounds familiar yet again. “Let me make sure it’s under warranty” lol The lady comes back to say they gave her the wrong info & that was for someone else’s car. However my car is hooked up there just trying to see what comes up. Ok... still I’m trying to stay calm even though my kids are getting antsy & I’m feeling like I’m in the freaking twilight zone! She comes back again to say they aren’t sure what could be wrong with my cat & that they are waiting to hear from headquarters... not her words... but someone over the tecs at the dealership because they can’t come up with a solution. “I’ll give you a loaner because it’s goimf to take hours and once we know something I’ll let you know.” I’m grateful for things being covered under warranty HOWEVER I’m having the EXACT same issues I was having with my Jetta. I have YET to make my first payment on this car & it’s been in the shop twice in less than 2 weeks. Sounds to me this is may be an common issue with VW... at least in my case. I want to love it so bad. But once my time is up with this car... if I’m not issues something else due to the outcome... I probably won’t purchase another VW. Unfortunately.

Solid Contender in its Class, Bigger than it seems

After exploring several options in the midsize SUV segment, the Tiguan SE was my pick. For ~$24K it offered the best value for money without feeling or sounding cheap in any way. Rear seat legroom is more than enough for most adults, even for long road trips. The 3rd seat is a joke unless you have kids under 10, but useful in a pinch. The only gripe I have about it is that it takes up a good bit of cargo space that can be had if you opt for the 4motion AWD model (3rd seat not available on that one). Has a higher level of refinement in handling than its competitors and the 2.0l turbo engine and 8-speed transmission work well to deliver avg. 33mpg or so on highway (I've nursed it to over 37 on my commute). VW's new infotainment system is best in class. Nothing offered by Honda, Kia, or Toyota comes close. It is intuitive, very fast, has a very sharp touchscreen, and sounds decent. I wish VW would incorporate some of their European-spec headlight technology in their North American models. This would be something I would pay extra for.

Love the design, under-rated engine actually performs well just drove it from NJ to Florida, great ride and comfort. It looks great, drives great, gas mileage could be a little better but adequate, cargo area is just fine severed us well. Use to midsize SUV this one is a great compliment. Driver’s aids are good warning sounds could be more distinct interior is awesome and Tech excellent. Great car for the price.

2019 already transmission problems, burning oil, had to replace the water pump bc low oil and low coolant constantly, dealerships won’t acknowledge the transmission problems and utilize the warranty even though there is a class action law suit for this specifically. Tried to charge me 1500 dollars out of warranty to change the spark plugs (too early for that) and to spray some type of engine spray on it, and change the breaks (don’t need to be changed). Oil caked all over my back window, just added another almost quart a year after they fixed the water pump, low oil is happening again, just changed the oil 3 months ago. Why is it low on oil again? Dealership wants 200 to diagnose, not under warranty if they can’t can’t find any issue, saying anything less than a quart low is within range. Goodbye lemon. Some 72k mile warranty. Only thing it fixed was the water pump, I’ve spent more money bringing it to them to find out what else is wrong with it than them fixing it. It’s a racket.

As a previous owner of a slew of Crossovers and SUV Most of them in the high end categories, i.e. Audi Q3, Q5, Range Rover Evoque and Sport HSE, BMW X6, BMW X1. I have to say that I needed to come down to basics. So I stopped the craziness and now I'm pocketing all of that extra money with the purchase of my 2018 VW Tiguan S. Yes S base trim. That is all you really need. For a unit that has the same power-plant all across the board 184hp 221Lb Torque why, why would you want to go for anything higher than your basic S trim??? For what.. Push button start? A larger display infotainment system? Or a CD player inside your glove-box. I mean, who really caries CD's anymore? All you need is a USB port or use the Android auto/Apple Car play. This New Tiguan is an amazing utilitarian vehicle. Very easy to live with and enjoy on daily commutes as well as road-trips. What a Winner! Everything else everyone else has mentioned positively on comments I SECOND. The People's Warranty is VW new 6yr/72K miles bumper to bumper and it is transferable if you decide to sell your vehicle. But why would you? Unless you want to jump on the PRETENTIOUSNESS WAGON! I don't really see any other reason why anyone from a family to empty nesters would want to buy anything else. BTW all vehicles with Push button start are more prone to be stolen in this age of technology, as I have heard of a few already. Get the facts first. Get informed. GET THIS TIGUAN S. KEEP YOUR LUNCH MONEY! 5 Stars all the way.

I drove the Honda CR-V and the Jeep Cherokee and compared all three. For me to buy the Jeep comparably priced cost would have been higher and a fraction of the warranty no third row seat. I found the same with the Honda CR-V. The third row seat is tight but a seat available in the back is better than no seat. There is plenty of cargo space versus the crv and Jeep.

THINK TWICE, PERHAPS 3 TIMES BEFORE BUYING A VW! VW will NOT back their products! Sign, drive and regret ever walking the showroom! To any Tiguan owners with a sunroof: BEWARE! Have the sunroof drainage tubes checked. They have a faulty design and often leak. There are forums online that show that many have the same issue. A few years ago, VW had a class action suit for the same thing. The design still sucks! My son has a 2018 that leaked so badly, they came out of the house to find 4 inches of water in the cabin. Even though the carpet and headliner were replaced, mold still persists. My daughter-in-law reacts violently. They will not use the heater or defroster as it pumps the spores into the cabin. They have a 5 month old son and will not subject him to this dangerous environment. One of the social media advocates contacted my son. VW said they would buy the car back, then reneged! 18 months old, less than 15 k miles and it is worthless to them. WHO WANTS TO DRIVE A HAZARDOUS MOLD INCUBATOR? They are cutting their losses ( over $10k ) and bought a reputable, reliable Toyota! Tiguan in German means “bend over!” It is a POS car sold by a POS company that refuses to stand behind their products! Totally done with VW! Makes you wonder why they need so many social media advocates! I suppose it is to handle the many issues. Unfortunately, they have no pull and corporate won’t back their faulty products! Good riddance! We (the parents) have driven only Subarus and Toyotas for the last 20 years. In the 80s and 90s we had a Jetta and 2 Audis that were nothing but headaches and electrical nightmares! My 2013 Tacoma has 114k on it. The only thing it has ever needed other than oil changes and tire replacement has been a set of front brake pads. One of our family Subies went 245k before we sold it, AND it is still on the road today. Always have Subie sunroofs. Our mechanic periodically blows out the drainage tubes (which exit by rear wheel well, not the front cabin pillar)and presto, no issues! Enough said! VW could have easily solved this debacle by doing the morally right thing by buying this lemon back at a fair price. I suppose I should expect such bush league business practices from a company whose Diesel engine computers were rigged to produce false data to pass emissions tests! Just another example of corporate crooks putting profits over principles without giving a rat’s ass about people’s health!

Car has had acceleration issues from Delivery. Not in a “engine too small for vehicle weight” but in a way that felt like there was a delay in gas delivery/combustion or even a disconnect with shifting. It’s scary as heck trying to pull into traffic, not knowing if your car won’t continue driving. Even though the car is cute and comfortable, and has lots of options at a decent price, none of that makes up for horrific flaw in the performance. The worst part is that VW KNOWS this is an issue and refuses to do anything since the diagnostic computer doesn’t see an issue. Update April 2020: this car still sucks to drive. The acceleration lag is so prevalent it’s unreal. I’ve had it in to VW three times for the issue, and each time I get a different pine of BS. “Use better gas” “dont hit the gas pedal so hard” “it’s the turbo” It’s none of the above. Again, the worst part is having the service manager acknowledge it’s a driving issue yet it’s not fixable therefore VW doesn’t care and isn’t doing anything about it. This car is the absolute worst car I’ve owned in 35 years of driving. Update May2022: VW replaced some computer chip and that “fixed” the acceleration disconnect about 90% of the time. Randomly the transmission will shift erratically and the car jerks, usually happens at slow speeds. Tons of other minor problems that the dealership ignores until the 4th or 5th time i bring it in. The only reason i still have it is because of how difficult it is to buy a new car with all the manufacturing delays. Still would not recommend this car.

Glad it came with a really long warranty. I bought it CPO with only 6K miles on it, and would not have bought it otherwise. CPO warranty is good until June 2026 or 84K miles. 2018-2019 models came with 6/72 bumper to bumper but the newer models are only 3/50. I bought it on a sunny Saturday afternoon. That night I discovered one of the LED headlights was not functioning beyond the daytime running lights. Turns out it had a leak due to a manufacturing defect. Warranty covered it, but $1,700 for a headlight is off the charts. Today, at all of 9K miles I have to pay $500 for new rotors because the warranty does not cover that. Dealer hangs their hat on a technicality that excludes brakes beyond 12 months since initial delivery as they consider it wear & tear at that point. They refuse to acknowledge it as a defect, yet they tell me it is nothing that I have done. I asked if they know how lame that sounds, and they conceded that they did but blamed VW warranty rules. Beyond that, it is a nice looking car with a great stereo and plenty of room.

AllTrack lost to the Tiquan, 03/09/2020

I really wanted the VW Alltrack wagon, but when I brought my family into the dealership they all walked over the to Tiguan, and that was that. We bought a Tiquan SEL Premium last December and now has 2K miles. Highs include a fantastic interior and very good visibility. The driver assistance package is excellent, a relative value, and much smoother at keeping the car between the lanes than the system on my 2018 BMW. Lows are over-matched engine that struggles to reach speed and makes a racket doing so. Interior space is very good, about the same as our 2016 Tourag. Oddly, this particular car got a little jiggly over 85mph, especially the (empty) front passenger seat. I lived in Germany for 5 years and have seen enough little VW Golf's bombing around the Autobahn at 130 plus mph to know this not right and I trust fixable by the dealer when it needs service. We love the car. Out the door price was 36K.

19 Tiguan SEL-R-Line Black vs 19 Rav 4 Adventure

I own both cars from brand new. Gave the wife my Rav 4 as her Civic lease was up and she wanted back into an SUV. I ended up with the Tiguan after 8 hours of car shopping. Both cars had an MSRP of around $37,000. In short, the Rav 4 is an over all better car. Here is everything better on the Rav 4 for the same price point: Stock Sound System is way better( to the point where i am going aftermarket on the VW, its that bad), Seats are more comfortable, Rav 4 comes with Lane Assist, Rav 4 comes with LED headlights(REALLY VW? NO LED's on a $37,000 SUV in 2019???), Rav 4 has better power, Rav 4 gets better MPG's and resale value of the Rav 4 is going to be wayyyyy better, Rav 4 has Off Road features/settings. Cons: No navigation system at $37,000, the clock always reset to 24 hour format(some bug?), not as good of warranty as VW, First gear is to aggressive and jerky Pros of the Tiguan: This is subjective but the styling of the Tiguan SEL R-Line is slightly better than the Rav 4 Adventure Trim, The Tiguan feels roomier. Navigation included(really Toyota? no navigation on a $37000 SUV in 2019??), While the Tiguan lacks a bit in power, it has a 2.0 Turbo which means companies like APR and BMS(JB4) for those in the know, will have a tune for it , greatly increasing horsepower and torque, Panoramic Sun Roof, 6 year/ 72,000 mile warranty Cons: Resale not as good, current lack of power, seat comfort, stock radio is terrible, no LED head lights, lack of lane assist, not as good MPGs(though only have 1100 miles) Both cars are still fun to drive and come with plenty of features but both could do better at the states MSRP price points 2021 Update- We traded in the 19 Rav 4 Adventure for a 21 Rav 4 XSE Hybrid. We owed $25,500 on the Rav 4 and we got $27,000 on the trade in. In comparison...the 19 Tiguan SEL R-line Jet Black trade in value is $22,000 TOPS with less miles on it than the Rav 4 had. This is why you buy a Toyota people. VW's resale is terrible. I also got a tune from MTM Tuning to increase TQ/Hp. It barely made a difference. Tuners are having trouble squeezing power of this disaster of an engine because the turbo is so small. This engine belongs in a Jetta, not a 3900LB SUV. MPG's are terrible. I mange to get around 20/21. The 19 Rav 4 Adventure was getting 26.5mpg. Thank got the Tiguan is a lease. I can't wait to give it back and get back into a Rav 4 in 2022.

I’ve had sooo many VWs. Lots of Jettas including the sport wagon. But the Tiguan is really something. I’m higher on the road, lots of safety features and a smoooooth ride. The acceleration is a bit on the slow side in drive, better in sport mode. Feels luxurious enough to me!

Recently purchased a 2019 Tiguan SEL. I LOVE the car! The ride is very nice & the cabin is quiet & well appointed.Technology abounds in the SEL model.I'm not concerned with the con of poor acceleration as it is an SUV and not a sports car.

Purchased my 2019 VW Tiguan SEL R-Line AWD in February of 2019. Within the first week, half of the buttons on my steering wheel were not lighting up, took it back to the dealership and they replaced them. I am over 2.5 years in with 47,000 miles, and two months ago, I had to have the wiring harness replaced because the power windows quit working. I was told that this wiring harness also controlled the climate control so they were surprised I hadn't had any problems with that. Today, I realized that when I lock the car, the doors aren't actually locking. I have loved the car but I do not love the repeated trips to the dealership. Thank goodness for the bumper to bumper warranty (that has since been shortened).

Car is awesome. It's a great value and feels well made all around. Great cross country comfort and gas mileage. I would not quite call it sporty, it could use a little more torque off the line but it's not exactly underpowered. The engine is noticeable under spirited acceleration but I kinda like the sound. Reminds of the first gen TDIs in the 90s in Germany - the sound, not so much the torque :-) The 8 speed auto works well to get you going and once you are at 30+mph you move smoothly and quietly. We love it, get the moon roof in the SE, you don't really need anything else. Interior is nice, safety feature are complete. Remember the SE is below 30K MSRP, it's a tremendous value. The '19 still have 7 year 72k warranty which is not bad either. We are very happy with the car.

This is not my first Volkswagen, I traded in my 2012 Volkswagen Eos in on the new Tiguan. In my opinion the Tiguan is the best value in the compact suv range. I looked at the Toyota Rav4, the Honda CR-V, Mazda Cx 5 as well as the Subaru Forester. I love the handling of the Tiguan as well as the fact that it has a real automatic transmission. In order to get the features that are standard on my Tiguan SE all of the other brands topped out well over 35,000. My only complaint about my Tiguan is the annoying stop start system. I guess that I have to get used to switching it off when I start the vehicle, all new vehicles have this system. I have not had any of the complaints that I have read about on Edmunds such as the rattling or sunroof leaks. I find the Tiguan's 2.0 Turbocharged engine very responsive. 6 months later and I still love my Tiguan.

Great SUV with a third row, power train performance feels good and very responsive when you need it. I don't know why it got bad reviews saying that it has a lack of power, it works perfect to me and we are talking about a SUV not a Golf R! Overall I'm happy with mine, it has a great interior looking, awesome panoramic sunroof, good quality electronic assistance packege.

2018 sel r-line. Love this car for 9 months out of the year. Interior is great. Sharpe on the outside. 45k miles and only had an electrical issue that was under warranty and fixed. Here are the big negatives. The windshield wipers do not lift off without the support bar hitting and scratching the hood. Wiper rest area is not heated so the Wipers freeze if its snowing while you are driving. Making it a severe hazard to drive in snowy conditions. But it handles the road amazingly well in all conditions. Oil changes are expensive and require special blends that only the dealership offers. No heated side mirrors even though I ha e a button that says they are. Can not turn off headlights while parked. The stereo system (Fender) just flat out sucks. ECN module ($1200 job to replace) located directly under the coolant overflow. Renders your car useless in the hotter months if you keep coolant full. I was told to keep it below 3/4 to prevent overflow again in the hotter months. Overall I would recommend this car to anyone who wants power and dependability.
