2002 Volkswagen Passat GLS 1.8T 4dr Sedan (1.8L 4cyl Turbo 5M)

Review

The 2002 VW Passat is the best stlyed
and overall fun filled VW to drive. In
town jaunts or out on the open highway
the seating comfort ,placement of
knobs , switches and gizmos are a no
brainer. Creature comfort gets an A+.
Handling is exceptional, has a larger
car feel and is quite nimbal

2002 Volkswagen Passat GLS 1.8T 4dr Sedan (1.8L 4cyl Turbo 5M)

Review

Would never buy a VW again after this
experience. The car has been to the
dealer greater than 8 times for repairs
that range from water pooling in the
front seat to engine coils needing
replacement. Car continues to shake
with the mechanics not knowing how to
fix it.

Review

I have had this "VW Certified" pile
for 13 weeks and it has been to dealer
7 times, 3 times in 1 week, twice in 6
days, check engine light, oil leak,
burned headlight, interior trim
falling down, cam adjuster, o2 sensor,
timing belt tensioner, you name it.
Looks and rides good, but I live 1hr
from the nearest dealer, so that's
14hrs spent driving to and from the
dealer for repairs. The car only has
52,000 miles and this is uncalled for.
Will demand buy back or take necessary
action to have it bought back.

2002 Volkswagen Passat GLS 1.8T 4dr Wagon (1.8L 4cyl Turbo 5M)

Review

I purchased a CPO 2002 Passat GLS 1.
8T Wagon in April of 2004 for a
cross-Canada trip heading west from
Ottawa to Vancouver Island then North
through Dawson Creek B.C. (mile 0 of the
Alaska Highway) and further north to
Great Slave Lake (above the 60th
Parallel) and back. The trip totalled
17000km and took 205 hours according to
the trip computer. The Passat swallowed
all of our gear and never complained
through a daily average of 6 hours on
the road at speeds anywhere from 30 to
75 mph. We averaged 36mpg over the full
distance in 32 days. Nothing went wrong.
A flawless trip in a car that left me
extremely impressed. I'd buy a new one
in a heartbeat.

Best Features

Power and economy are each well represented and delivered with the 1.8T. Our route covered everything from prairie vastness to high snowy mountain peaks to twisty shoreline roads and this little engine 'that could' solidly delivered 35+ mpg day after day and never lacked get up and go.

Worst Features

Firm up the ride a bit. While definitely 'not your father's Oldsmobile' the ride could be more taut through the curvy bits. The clutch pedal has far too much travel; my 94 Probe GT has better clutch feel and action. Improve the seatback tilt control (that knob has got to go).

Review

If you insist on buying a Passat, stay
away from the 4 cylendar. We have had
more problems with this car in two
years than I have had with my '96
corolla in 9 years. We had to have it
towed twice for ignition coil
failures. The passenger
side seatbelt broke and it took 2
weeks to get it repaired. Then
several trips to the dealer for the
check engine light which dumbfounded
the technicians. The final straw came
on the 25,000 mile service when they
told me the rear brake pads and rotors
were 90% worn and rusted. AT 25,000
miles!!!. $350.00. The dealer did
repair them on warrenty but only after
I threatened to get a second opinion.
Hmmmm.

Best Features

Style, interior quality and base-level features.

Worst Features

More storage space/compartments. Better CD compartment. Better cruise contol controls. Get rid of the automatic locking tail gate.
