Used 2000 Volkswagen Jetta Consumer Reviews
never again
I bought this car new, thinking I was getting a solid, reliable car. It looks good, handles well, and is fun to drive -- but it has so many problems, overall it has been one big frustration. Something breaks, I put the car on probation (and go look at Toyotas) it runs well for a while and then something breaks again. So far -- vents, latch on the center armrest & cupholders have broken (twice), glove box door fell off. Both driver & passenger windows have fallen & won't go up. Mass airflow meter, brake switch light have been replaced. Brakes locked. Check emissions light is ALWAYS on. And that's for starters. Service at local VW dealers is abysmal.
Unreliable
-5/1999: Check Engine Light on. Unstable front driver seat. Covered under warranty. -12/2001: Not starting in the rain. Replaced coil pack. Water leaking inside from passenger side door. $600 not covered under warranty. Car still has problems in rain. -8/2003: Windows fell into the doors. Covered under recall. -10/2003: Airbag light on. According to dealer, passenger side airbag needs to be replaced. $500 not covered under warranty despite car never being in accident or air bag ever deploying. -8/2004: Gas tank blockage. Replaced under warranty. Several visits required because dealer "forgot" to fix.

Be afraid - be very afraid!
I was so excited...my first NEW car. No more worrying about breaking down or having my car in the shop - I was buying a VW! NOT! This car stinks so bad - I don't even know where to start - I'm so angry w/ VW I just can't stand it. Gas tank was replaced after having the car for 1 month. Sunroof leaks, mass air-flow sensor had to be replaced, passenger & driver window regulators both broke within a week of eachother. VW Customer Care has reminded me that VW is not obligated to help it's customers after the warranty expires - even if they know the parts they used to build the car are crappy. Please save yourself the trouble - buy ANY other car!
My fingers are crossed
Good so far, but still, a few typical problems: Three window regulator replacements. Chipping and scratching on the inner door handles and sliding cig lighter/coin tray lid. The front spoiler assembly has been dragged off its flimsy plastic attach points. Replacement of the A/C adapter next to the coin tray. The left driver door creaks. Chances are, the mechanic's previous job was fixing shopping carts. The service center waiting room is a kingdom of Woe. The car has been fine so far, but I'm thinking about making a clean break when the lease is up.
Good All Around Car
Overall this car has been good to me. There were some unexpected repairs, but I'd gladly sacrifice 100% reliability for styling and fun. Not to say this car ever left me stranded or broke down during rush hour. It's great in the snow and rain and the fuel economy is still over 30 mpg on average. With over 80k miles I'm still on my first set of breaks and clutch. The major problem is that it burns 1 qt of oil every 1000+ miles, which is a hassle for some, but overall it's nothing that I have trouble living with. Let me mention that this car has sat in traffic for 1000s of hours - the kind of wear that breaks down a car the most - and still very few problems.
