Used 1996 Volkswagen Jetta Consumer Reviews
Bought from my Lease- BIG MISTAKE
I leased my 96 VW Jetta and then purchased from the lease BIG MISTAKE. I've lost much money between payments and repairs. I've had to replace my O2 sensor, timing belt, full brake job, alternator, battery, coolant system leak you name it all before 75000, then my molding fell off while driving and I almost got into accident with that. My tire rims have chipped paint. Now my check engine light comes on all the time, I just replaced my engine belt and still more problems to date. I like the VW wagons, but I will NEVER EVER buy VW again, the car is not made well at all and very overated.
I'd never buy one again
This was my first vehicle. It was fun to drive, but, I'd never put a teenager behind this wheel. The biggest problem was that the car would just completely shut off while I was driving. I'd have to coast to the side of the road. Spent thousands trying to fix this problem, no shop could figure out what was wrong with it. Other not so major problems: check engine light- always on, a/c broke, radio system complete broke, the key would GET STUCK in the ignition-- no one in my family could get it out.. so I'd have to leave it unlocked sometimes, with the key in the ignition, and for a time, I had issues opening the trunk. Cute car, but so not worth it.
Best car ever
What a great car
My last VW
Briefly and to the point. I have spent more in repairs over the years than the car cost me to buy($15000). If I had sold it at end of warranty period I would have been ok. Electrical gremlins were many and often returned within days of "fix".. I finally put black tape over the annoying light. Reliability is highest priority for me and VW has lost many good customers due to this issue. I still use the car for dump runs and local use but never for long distances.
love it
NO real problems at 120k. Love the way it drives.
