I just bought my GTI two months ago. This is my first VW. The GTI is a pretty fun car to drive, it accelerates and shifts very smoothly. I love the design of the car's interior and the exterior. The lines are very clean and simple. It is a little too heavy and its handling is a bit iffy. It's not as fast as I thought it was going to be. It has a bad placement for the cup holder.
The 20th Anniversary GTI is a pleasure to drive on long trips. The seats are very adjustable. I don't get tired of driving it on short trips either. The only thing I wished it had is a center arm rest. The performance is fantastic in every way. It handles like it's on rails. It can easily out accelerate most cars on the road today. All this, and it still gets 30 mpg on the highway.
The engine and 6 speed transmision work very well together. You would be hard pressed to find a nice match like this elsewhere.
Like I said earlier, the only thing that is missing is a center arm rest. I found that people have installed an arm rest from a different model. It still looks stock with these pieces installed also.
