2002 Volkswagen GTI Hatchback 1.8T 2dr Hatchback (1.8L 4cyl Turbo 5M)

Review

This is the first car I ever purchased.
I am a first year college student, so
the 19 grand I dropped on my new GTI was
a lot. I loved it until everything
started to go wrong. I have had water
in my brake lines (which froze so I
could not stop or shift), a broken fuel
pump, broken ABS module, broken window
mechanism, broken clutch cable, broken
dome light switch, and a problem with
the door locks. I will never buy
another VW unless the company restores
my faith in a serious way.

Best Features

The acceleration and the shifting (untilI had problems with the clutch)

Worst Features

Please, Volkswagen, I bought this car for quality... get some.

Vehicle

2002 Volkswagen GTI Hatchback VR6 2dr Hatchback (2.8L 6cyl 5M)

Review

I have the late year 200-bhp 6-speed
version. Well worth the wait. The
ride is smooth, while the handling is
very responsive; the acceleration is
very good for the size of the engine.
I've put 11,400 miles on in the past 7
months, and no faults yet. The
interior is very comfortable for a
sporty car (I'm 6'2", 225 lb). The
cupholder could be in a mildly better
position (right in front of the radio
controls), but it's the best cupholder
I've ever seen. Aside from that, the
interior is designed for people who
take driving very seriously.

Complaints:
1. The car occasionally stalls when
attempting a warm start.
2. The Monsoon Stereo sucks.

Best Features

200-bhp VR6 is well worth it. The 6- speed manual is not geared for fuel efficiency, but it makes accelerating too easy. The trip computer & instrument panel are easy to read. Seats are comfortable for large people.

Worst Features

Improve the factory head unit. The double-din unit in the GTI is VERY poor. Replacing the head unit with an aftermarket helps tremendously. Move the cupholder out of the way of the radio. 6th gear could be more fuel efficient.

Vehicle

2002 Volkswagen GTI Hatchback 1.8T 2dr Hatchback (1.8L 4cyl Turbo 5M)

Review

Initially I liked the vehicle a lot.
However after a while it developped a
number of problems and needed 3 visits
to the dealership for variouse non
maintenance warranty items in the first
year of ownership ($200-$400 each if
out of warranty). Rattles are
everywhere. VW dealerships have a very
bad reputation in general. 1 week to
get an appointment is considered
excellent. So far the wehicle barely
meets my expectations. Based on the
service, reliability and rattles I will
not buy a VW again. And to top it off I
did not even mentioned the ignition
coils debacle going on.

Best Features

Exterior and interior design (excluding the rattles) + 1.8T (excluding the poor parts quality like coils, MAFs, etc.)

Worst Features

VW needs to seriously focus on the parts quality and the dialership network quality.

Vehicle

2002 Volkswagen GTI Hatchback VR6 2dr Hatchback (2.8L 6cyl 6M)

Review

I went looking for a used BMW M3 or
Audi S4 and was dissappointed by
availability around $30-$33k. Walked
into VW and saw the newest 200HP VR6
and immediately asked for a test drive.
Sadly, only a 1.8L Turbo was available.
Within 2 hours, I had signed to buy the
next VR6 coming into the lot
thinking, "well if the 1.8 hums,
imagine how a v6 will perform!" I was
not at all dissappointed by my decision
especially considering I was ready to
buy a used car and walked away with a
brand new one.

Best Features

Wide aggressive stance, great wheels, enough room for golf clubs (barely), great leather interior, sporty clutch, and seeing the surprise on people's faces when you blow by them off the line or on the highway.

Worst Features

Cup holder is positioned in the worse possible place...Right where you put CDs into the stereo! I can live with it though.

Review

If you're looking to buy a Gti, or any
VW or Audi with the 1.8t or VR6
motor, then read on. Perhaps by
now you've heard about VW's little
problem with their ignition coilpacks.
Long story short, they used a third
party manufacturer and got burned.
Inferior parts, a HOWLING VW
customer base, and not enough of
them to fix the cars that are already
out there. Beware, 9k on mine, in the
shop 3x now, once for brake recall,
once for alarm going off mysteriously
at 3:00 am, and now once for 1 of 4
coilpacks. I wonder when the three
other little ticking time bombs are
going to go off ? For more info, go to
the forums at www.vwvortex.com

Best Features

Fun to drive, stock will out run most others, has trouble with the WRX and muscle.

Worst Features

Stiffer suspension, tighter tranny
