Big fun, small price

2015 Volkswagen Golf GTI
This is my third VW golf, I love these cars. I think when you look up the word "car" in the dictionary, there should be a picture of a golf. I have a strategy for buying these cars cheap. The 2 door manual trans cars are less popular and they get dealer traded a lot, so I usually can find a previous model year car still sitting on the lot with like 300 dealer trade transport miles on it … at a deep discount. (I understand now that 2016 was the last year of 2 door GTIs, boo, hiss!!) With this GTI I got the car for $6300 off sticker without haggling, so that's a brand new GTI for under $20k. This is my first Mexican built VW. My previous two golfs were built in Wolfsburg Germany, but I see no difference in build quality with the mk7 mexico golfs, they are well built. The PROS: Awesome acceleration, great steering, the best clutch and gear box combination I have ever experienced. The clutch is so user friendly and effortless, and the hill hold feature makes it even better in hilly traffic situations. The brakes are really nice, very responsive and lots of stopping power. Impressive fuel economy, I'm getting pretty much the published EPA numbers. These cars are solid and safe and they feel really stable at high speed. The seats!, I love VW seats because they are actually designed to support a human body correctly. It's cheaper to insure than my previous slow boring subaru crosstrek, how does that work? I like the redesigned storage compartment with the ipod cable inside in front of the gear shift; I leave an old 30gig ipod in there permanently. I like the parking assist display and audible cues. The entertainment system and audio system interface are a good example of VWs continuous improvement of their designs. The system is more intuitive and functional vs my mk6 golf but without feeling drastically different. Finally, nothing beats the practicality of this car, you can get so much stuff into it, its easy to park, and cheap to own. The CONS: Torque steer isn't bad in this car, but if you punch it hard it will sneak up on you sometimes. My diesel golf had about the same torque but much slower acceleration and less horsepower so torque steer was much reduced in that car compared to the GTI. Premium fuel is a bummer but really what is an extra $1.50 per tank? I miss the cruise control buttons on the turn signal stalk on my mk5 and mk6 golfs. That was really a more functional setup than having the buttons on the steering wheel, which are harder to reach quickly. CD player in the glove box is a little weird, but it's not that big a deal. VW seems to be unable to design a door and side window that doesn't either rattle or have an irritating air leak. In the case of the 2015 GTI 2door the window rubber is a little hard and it rattles when driving around town on rough roads. If I roll the window down 1/4 inch it stops rattling. I've learned not to complain to the dealer about stuff like this because they usually fix the wrong thing and they make it worse. For me the biggest drawback to owning a VW is dealing with VW when something goes wrong with the car, and believe me, something will go wrong during the warranty period. VW likes to issue warranty extensions for known defects rather than issuing recalls. That means they wait for the component to fail with the "guarantee" that they will replace it when it fails. That's no big deal, but sometimes "they" can be quite petty and tight lipped about, if, how, and when they will resolve the issue (and by "they" I mean VW corporate dictating to the dealers what is going to happen). For instance when the high pressure fuel pump in my TDI failed on a dark isolated road in the middle of the night at 37k miles and was covered by a warranty extension because of a known defect, they made me wait 9 days with no feedback, no loaner car, and a 50/50 chance of being financially responsible for a $5k repair while they sent a fuel sample for lab analysis to screen my fuel for banned substances (gasoline, fuel treatments, biodiesel, etc.) German companies view customers as an unfortunate byproduct of being in business..... but all of this doesn't stop me from buying Volkswagens because I just can't find a car that I like better, you just need to have a zen attitude about it. (Update - as of 2019 I still love the car. My only gripe is that during cold weather the cable operated gear shift can get a bit notchy during quick shifts) (Update - as of 2020 nothing has changed, I still love the car. At 15k miles the transmission developed an oil leak out of the input shaft seal. It was a bit of an ordeal to get my dealership which is 60 miles from home to find the problem even though their lube technician was the one who found the leak initially. I had to hang out at the dealer and coach them on how to get it to leak. Once they found it they had to keep the car for over a week to take the trans out, but all is fixed and still ok 4K miles later.)
